Polaris Genesis i Captain's Report

Tested by Capt. Vince Daniello

Perfect for the Family of Four

My experiences as a professional captain have included yachts over 100 feet and commercial vessels over 200 feet. To me, “big” is at least eighty feet. But as far as Personal Watercraft go, the Genesis i is a big boat! Using a similar hull design as the Virage and Freedom models, Polaris extended the boat nearly a foot, for a total length of 131 inches. The additional capacity, stability, and storage provided by the additional length makes the Genesis i the ultimate family PWC.

Provides Lots of Room

While the Genesis i hull is the same width and nearly identical in shape to her smaller cousins, the company added the additional length aft. This provides buoyancy and lift where it is needed to plane off and run fast with a large load and provides additional seating space, which gives the Genesis i room for three adults quite comfortably and space for a fourth junior-sized rider. By adding to the boat in the stern where it is widest and the bottom is flatter, Polaris has noticeably increased the stability of the boat while keeping the standard width, which should keep trailering and docking arrangements simple. The boat’s big 135 horsepower fuel-injected engine will carry the weight of three riders, and still leave a reserve for pulling a tube. (Total capacity is four including the tuber.)

Plenty of Storage

While adding eleven inches to the stern is not a lot in terms of the interior volume of the hull, the increased storage space is enormous. On most PWCs the fuel tank, oil reservoir, and throttle cable mechanism are located under the bow, decreasing available storage to a few gallons in a removable bucket. Because of the added length, Polaris could move this equipment aft, leaving the entire forward section of the hull for storage. This cavernous compartment is fitted with a rotocast insert to protect stored gear from the inside of the fiberglass hull. Another added benefit, the longer hull with the weight concentrated more in the middle than most Personal Watercraft gives the Genesis i a better ride, particularly when running into or with the waves.

Standard Features

The Genesis i comes equipped like most of the company’s models, with features such as rear view mirrors and an easy-to-read instrument package. This boat also has an electric switch to place the jet-drive into reverse, conveniently located on the handlebars by the rider’s left thumb. While the system worked well and was more convenient than reaching for a reversing lever, I missed the feedback I normally get from having my hand on the lever. The electronic display does clearly indicate when the boat is in reverse, but having to look at the display when maneuvering took some getting use to. By the end of my tests, it had become second nature.

Handling and Ride

Before testing the boat, I was a bit concerned that it would be unbalanced or awkward to ride with just one person, but this proved false. Because Polaris carefully centered the weight in the boat, it handled well and was as fun to ride with one person as the smaller boats; the smoother ride and added horsepower were bonuses. All in all the Polaris Genesis i proved to be quite a versatile boat, equally ready to load up the family and head to the beach with a picnic lunch, or provide impressive performance and plenty of fun for a lone rider.
