Formula 240 Sun Sport (2014-) Captain's Report

By Capt. Steve--

Formula 240 Sun Sport

The Formula 240 SS has a LOA of 24’ (7.32 m) and a trailerable beam of 8'6" (2.59 m).

Mission Statement

The Formula 240 Sun Sport was created as a result of customer feedback, mostly from Europe, for creating a small, easily transportable cruiser that can comfortably accommodate overnights. With her closed bow she can easily handle choppy waters while letting spray roll right off her foredeck.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

The layout of the 240 Sun Sport lends itself well to intimate gatherings for small crowds and casual overnights.

Distinguishing Features

10-year Structural Warranty. We've seen five-year but 10-year certainly signifies a company that is standing behind their products.

Five-year Formula Guard Protection. This covers all the components on the boat that normally have a 1 year protection plan. Formula Guard kicks in after the initial one year for protection for an additional 4 years. Again, this is indicative of a company standing behind their product.

Imron Graphics. While it's rare for a boat to not have any graphics on the topsides, they are nearly always decals. Naturally these will start to peel after several years of use, and it's not uncommon to see dirt collect at the edges. Formula's graphics are applied with Imron paint, which is a very high end paint and a difficult process to apply. All of the problems with decals are thus eliminated.

High End Finish. It's very easy to pick a Formula out of the crowd of boats going by. They have a much higher gloss and shine to their finish that makes them stand out above the rest. This is because Formula dedicates so much time to polishing their finishes to perfection.

Imron Hull Colors. For an additional $2,835 the boater can have the 240 Sun Sport in one of 26 different colors but the difference here is that the colors are not in the gelcoat. The topsides are sprayed with Imron paint. And once the boat comes out of the spray booth, a team descends upon it to polish it for hours on end, bringing out an incredible mirror-like finish. In fact, during my last visit to the Formula factory I saw a hull that looked absolutely flawless and I could see every detail of my face in the reflection. But as I stepped away from the hull, a woman smeared another layer of compound on it and started back in with the electric buffer. It just seems to go on and on.

Features Walkthrough

Stern Features

The stern of the 240 Sun Sport presents what has become a very popular feature with Formula boats… the aft facing rumble seat. It makes a great place to lounge out while at anchor, or drifting along, and easily converts into a sun pad in seconds. There is convenient trunk storage to the port hand side which makes an excellent location for storing lines and fenders.

I would definitely opt for the teak grain vinyl decking for the swim platform ($2,665). It really adds to the first impression that the 240 Sun Sport will make on the guests as they come aboard. Formulas are generally very high-end boats and are a little pricier than most but one gets a lot for what they pay for. Owners rarely squabble over the cost of the additional options as they tend to make what is already a premium boat even better.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

The transom really looks good with the optional teak grain vinyl decking. Notice the four courtesy lights in the corners. The cleat to the right is Formula logoed and it is one of six throughout the boat.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

The rear seat and aft facing rumble seat both convert to a sun pad in seconds. This has become a very popular feature on Formula boats.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

The LED courtesy lights are standard but a handheld remote control is $520. The optional teak decking is $2,665, and the transom shower is $905. Transom stereo remote is standard.

There are Some Transom Options to Consider. If one tends to use the 240 Sun Sport at night, they'll really come to appreciate the transom LED lights that shine onto the swim platform. If one is regularly boarding the 240 Sun Sport at night then they may want to consider the handheld remote control for those LED lights ($520). If the boater has a family and find themselves frequently bringing kids onboard, then the optional transom gate will be a must ($290). And finally, if everyone is swimming in salt water then the transom shower plumbed to the 10 gallon (37.9 L) demand water system should be considered. Now, let's step inside.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

The concealed three-step reboarding ladder is off to the side which keeps everyone clear of the sharp edges of the outdrive and in clear sight of the helm.

The Cockpit Layout. When entering the cockpit of the 240 Sun Sport there is L-shaped seating to port and a pair of bucket seats forward. Naturally the bucket seats will swivel around to face the crowd which transforms the area into an intimate conversational area.

The cockpit is formed from a single molded liner so there are no edges or opposing surfaces to rub against one another while underway. The cockpit seating is all weather resistant, coated with PreFixx stain inhibitor, and built around StarLite XL synthetic marine panels and DriFast foam. More importantly, the upholstery is all French stitched with Tenera element resistant thread which will not deteriorate under the constant onslaught of the sun.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

The cockpit of the Formula 240 Sun Sport lends itself very well to intimate gatherings as the forward bucket seats will swivel around to face the crowd.

Cockpit Options. While the cockpit is nicely equipped, Formula always allows for upgrading so a customer can dial in the boat to his/her specific needs. Among the items to consider is the extra battery with selector switch ($635). Spending all day on the water listening to the tunes, and then running into the night with the cockpit lights on can take its toll on any battery. Being able to switch to a fresh power supply to start the engines is peace of mind well worth the up-charge.

As it's unlikely that one will be climbing from the beach onto the swim platform, and therefore tracking sand into the boat, I would opt for the cockpit carpet ($720) as it feels softer on bare feet and has a classy wood trim pattern to it.

A must have cockpit feature would have to be the molded wet bar with stainless steel sink, Corian countertop, concealed trash container, and stainless safety rail. Aside from looking great, it is very functional and the sink is plumbed to the same 10 gallon (37.9 L) water supply as the optional transom shower ($905).

If One Is Into Watersports There are Two Items to Consider. First would be the 12V inflator ($260) which will allow tubes to be brought aboard without having them take up the ridiculous amount of space that they do.

Arch Support. The second item in the watersports options category would be the sport arch. The basic arch comes with a stainless steel finish, two rotating board racks and LED anchor light with swivel head ($6,345). And adding two halogen tower lights, two quick release speakers and a 3-lens mirror will cost $8,675. A Bimini top for the tower is also available ($1,690).

Taking a Look at the Helm. The helm of the 240 Sun Sport is a little unusual, for what we typically see nowadays, in that the analog gauges are clustered around the center of the panel. A digital depth sounder is standard as is the very attractive burlwood panels.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

Livorsi gauges with chrome bezels look great against the burlwood panels of the helm.

Moving into the cabin. The entryway to the cabin is slightly offset from the centerline and a sliding door retracts under the steps to the windshield walkthrough. The custom patterned carpet is standard and a U-shaped forward double berth has filler cushions to add to the sleep-ability. The concealed portable head is in the center of the V-seating and one can opt to add a dockside pump out ($395), or upgrade to a porcelain head with dockside pump out ($1,600) or a porcelain head with macerator, Y-valve, and dockside pump out ($2,795).

Formula 240 Sun Sport

Facing forward shows the sleeping room. Notice the single Bomar hatch and speakers with stainless grills.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

With one of the filler cushions removed it becomes a sitting room. Underneath the center cushion is the concealed head.

Formula 240 Sun Sport

Just inside the entryway, and to port is a stylish armrest with drink holders and stereo.

Engine Choices and Pricing

Base price for the Formula 240 Sun Sport is $100,820 when equipped with a 260-hp 5.0L MPI MerCruiser engine with a B3 sterndrive. Options go up to the 430-hp MerCruiser 8.2L V8 and will bring the base price, before any other options, to $123,360.

However, as I said in the beginning, the Sun Sport line is more about comfort than speed. Opting all the way up to the highest engine may not be the best use of one's funds. Formula boats have a good reputation for performing well and should do fine with either the base engine or even some of the midrange choices around 300-hp. In that instance the boater will be between $100,000 and $104,180.

Observations

The Formula 240 Sun Sport serves as an outstanding pocket cruiser with the added ability to be trailered to remote locations, which will greatly expand the cruising range. What could be better than heading out to a remote lake for the weekend and bringing the boat, and accommodations along? The only missing ingredient is the food, and one is on their own for that.

Certainly Formula boats have a reputation for being a little upscale and therefore pricey, but that means they're not for everyone. If everyone made plain-vanilla boats what a boring world it would be. I've never heard of a Formula customer that was unhappy with his/her purchase. Much to the contrary, the purchase of the Formula also includes bragging rights and the pride of ownership that makes it all worthwhile.
