Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS (2012-)
Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS (2012-)
Carolina Skiff tests the waters with the all-fiberglass Fun Chaser 1900 DS and 2200 DS, designs that it calls "deckboats." They are certainly not like the deck boats that we are used to seeing, ones built by companies such as Hurricane, which invented the breed. But never mind, a company can call its boats anything it wants. These two all-new boats come in "Cruise-and-Fish" versions offering activity-specific features including ski lockers and livewells, respectively.

Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS (2012-) Captain's Report

By Capt. Dan Armitage

Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS

This picture says it all: Drawing only 10" (25 cm) the Fun Chaser 2200 DS is made to order shallow water locations.

Mission of the Fun Chaser 2200 DS

"Family fun and fishing all in one -- that's the concept behind Fun Chaser deckboats," says Joe Kirkland, president and CEO of Carolina Skiffs. "Think of these boats as your family's own recreation or living room on the water. From pleasure cruising and tubing to skiing and fishing, these deckboats are perfect for virtually any on-the-water activity," he says.

Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS

The Fun Chaser 2200 DS Fish model provides a stable platform with plenty of deck space for fishing and accommodating friends who may simply want to relax for a comfortable day on protected water.

Distinguishing Features

The most distinguished aspect about this boat is that there is nothing quite like it on the market. It is not a skiff, but it has a skiff-like cathedral hull with a 12-degree deadrise at the transom and full sections forward with a beam that is pretty much the same from front to back.

It has pontoon-boat style fencing all around the deck, and a pontoon boat style helm, but it is not a pontoon boat because it doesn't have any toons. It has lots of open space and lots of seating like a deckboat, yet it is certainly not like a conventional deckboat which has bottoms that are pretty much like those of sportboats, and few if any have a cathedral hull these days. So what is it?

It is a Fun Chaser deckboat. A new breed of boat introduced by Carolina Skiff for the 2012 season. This is the crossover boat of the year.

Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS

The new Fun Chaser series for 2012 represents Carolina Skiff’s first entry into the deckboat market.

Construction Features

The four-model Fun Chaser deckboat series is built using the same all-composite construction methods used in Carolina Skiff boats. A patented box-beam construction method produces a solid, durable, non-flexing hull that is completely wood free.

Composite consoles, decks, seat bases and even the fencing panels that surround the decks, allow the boats to be low-maintenance, easy to clean and economical to buy. The boat has stainless steel railings and hardware. Both deckboat models come with built-in, flush-mounted anchor lockers forward, battery compartments aft, built-in 58-gallon fuel tanks and cathedral-style, shallow-V hulls that have 12 degrees of deadrise at the transom.

Basic Specs

The Fun Chaser 2200 DS is 22'3" LOA, with a 8'2" beam, draws 10" and weighs 2,350 lb. Her maximum rated horsepower is 200. Fencing and seating is vinyl over fiberglass.

Both 2200 DS models offer wraparound lounge seats in the cockpit.

Seating Features

Carolina Skiff’s Cruise and the Fish deckboat models each feature what are known in the pontoon boat trade as “playpens” surrounded by fencing that is supported by round, stainless steel railing.

The upholstery and side panel liners are constructed using all marine-grade, UV–protected vinyl. A color-matched Bimini top is standard aboard the new 1900 and 2200 series deckboats from Carolina Skiff. Matching forward Biminis are offered as options.

The fencing is made using fiberglass panels. The cargo netting storage comes standard and is handy for stowing items for quick access or air-drying. Note the raised panel feature to allow water to drain under the fencing and off the deck and the LED courtesy light.

Seat bases aboard the new Fun Chaser deck models flip forward for easy access to storage compartments. Note the lockable hatch covering the ski (Cruise model) or rod storage (Fish model) locker built into the sole.

A portable cockpit table, handy to both wraparound lounge seats flanking the cockpit, comes standard on the 2200 DS models.

The 2200 DS models offer an adjustable helm seat with flip-up armrests standard. Check out the vinyl lining the inside of the fence panels.

Fishing Features

Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS

Two aerated baitwells and a livewell are offered aboard the Fish version of the Fun Chaser 2200 DS for 2012.

The Fun Chaser 2200 DS Fish model comes with a pair of stainless steel vertical rod holders and twin 12-gallon molded fiberglass baitwells forward and a 22-gallon livewell built into the seat base forward of the helm console, all with LED lighting. The fish model also offers two removable fishing chairs and, up on the bow, a 12-volt trolling motor receptacle and remote tilt and trim switch. Lockable storage for up to eight fishing rods is available in the locker built into the boat’s sole in Rod Saver holders. The strap-style horizontal holders are attached to each side of the flush-mounted compartment, which frees-up space for other items.

Helm Features

The one-piece composite console is large, incorporates an integrated pad for the throttle control, appears to offer adequate leg room below, and encloses a compartment with trays for two batteries underneath.

The fiberglass dash panel comes with full instrumentation and lighted, breakered toggle switches for accessories.

LED courtesy, livewell, baitwell and navigation lights are offered as standard equipment in red or blue aboard the new-for 2012 2200 series Fun Chaser deckboats from Carolina Skiff.

Transom Features

Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS

An integrated swim platform at the transom is accessed by a four-step folding ladder that is complemented by an extra-wide top step pad. Both Fish and Cruise versions come equipped with a pop-up changing room aft and a stainless-steel tow pylon over the outboard.

Carolina Skiff Fun Chaser 2200 DS

The Fun Chaser 2200 DC features a low-profile deck that offers easy shore access for man or beast.

Observations

These new deckboats from Carolina Skiff are true crossovers, offering the wide-open spaces of traditional pontoon boats. The boats’ all-stainless-steel-and-composite construction should equate to low maintenance, even when used in saltwater.

Carolina Skiff reps tell us that the 2200 DS, in either Fish or Cruise layout, will run in the low-40 mph range when equipped with the standard 150-hp outboard, and ten mph faster with the maximum 200-hp. A 2012 Fun Chaser 2200 DS Fish or Cruise, equipped with a 2012 150-hp Suzuki outboard, retails for about $34,500, plus trailer.

Carolina Skiff has come up with a very creative vessel for protected water locations. Certainly, we can see her as a place for kids to use as swimming platform. And, in protected water it might also be a good entertainment platform. Clearly she has a calling for skinny water as she draws only 10". We can think of many ponds, rivers, lakes, and even tidal areas that have thin water and this boat might be just the ticket there for flat-water boating.
