Campion Allante LX 825 (2011-)
Campion Allante LX 825 (2011-)
Targeting the first-time cruiser owner, the 28' (8.48 m) Allante 825 features amenities and a layout common in most express cruisers in its class. What is not so common in the popular pocket cruiser class of boats under 30' is her 9'4" (2.84 m) beam -- 10" more than many sub-30' boats in class. Creative use of that space is apparent topside, where the extra beam accommodates a circular seating arrangement in the cockpit, and below decks, where the mid-cabin is plenty wide enough to offer a queen-size berth.

Campion Allante LX 825 (2011-) Captain's Report

Campion Allante LX 825

With a 9'4" (2.84 m) beam the Allante LX 825 is one of the largest 28' cruisers you're likely to find.

Captain’s Report:

Campion Allante LX 825

The 825’s broad beam means extra space for entertaining and more comfortable cruising.

The Back Story -- Short Version

With a goal to be recognized as the ‘greenest’ boat builder in the world, British Columbia-based Campion Marine has been offering a wide range watercraft for nearly four decades. Canada’s largest independent fiberglass boat builder, Campion produces 37 boat models in 48 variations, from 16-foot bow riders to 30-foot cabin cruisers sold through dealerships in more than 30 countries.

From its factory in Kelowna, BC, on the shores of Okanagan Lake, the family-owned company has been at the forefront in producing environmentally friendly watercraft, winning awards for its efforts.

A Creative Difference

The Campion Allante LX 825 is a mid-cabin cruiser measuring 27’10” (8.48 m) that offers plenty of appeal and a surprising amount of elbow room.

Campion Allante LX 825

Campion designers incorporated a circular seating arrangement in the cockpit that they tell us allows guests to more easily face each other. Note the centerline transom door which is unusual.

The cockpit’s round-shaped seating area includes a bench section to port that has a comfortable reclining back. In both stern quarters the seat sections are removable for fishing from the cockpit.

At the Helm

At the helm, the 825 features a large, double-wide seat to allow four sets of eyes to face forward. The seat comes with a standard flip-up bolster on the driver’s side. To port of the helm are two large, integrated steps flanked by stainless steel handrails leading up to the bow area, accessed through a fold-out section in the center of the windshield. A sun pad on the rotund foredeck is standard on the LX.

Where does the chartplotter and DF go? Campion tells us that the glove box lid is made to take these instruments. Note the Livorsi throttle and shift controls which we like.

Instrument gauges are placed high and in easy view of the operator, as is a traditional compass, a welcome standard item aboard the Allante. The modular dash is set in the fiberglass deck liner that has been molded to accept it as one piece.

The wiring harness for the instruments is color-coded and labeled every five inches for easy identification. Access to the back of the dash panel is available via a hatch in the boat’s head. The lid for the helm console’s glovebox is recessed and reinforced to accommodate an optional flush-mounted fish-finder/GPS screen – yet continues to function as a storage compartment.

View from the companionway looking forward: This is about as good as it can get in a 28' express cruiser. She has full standing headroom by the galley up to the table and in the head compartment. There are three opening hatches in the overhead and three portlights. The microwave is high as it should be.

Cabin Notes

Overhead, a full-length fiberglass liner gives the cabin a clean, shiny look and is molded to accept features such as cabinetry and countertops with a neat, precise fit. The convertible table is supported by two pedestals. Forward the banquette with table makes into a double bed.

There is a mirror forward that hides a hatch to the anchor locker. This is an important detail and one many builders simply omit. For any number of reasons anchor chain or rode can become tangled and often the only way to put it to rights is to get into the anchor locker and wrestle with it -- something that is impossible on many boats this size from the deck hatch.

Both the forward and the mid-cabin berths offer enough headroom to allow occupants to sit up and read, along with shelf space and lighting.

Looking aft into the mid cabin: In a 28-footer this is more overhead room than usual.

Eco-Friendly Construction

Campion uses Corecell, which is a premium core material, and three-dimensional-weave fiberglass mat saturated with Envirez resins to construct its hulls. This builder is the first in the world to use the bio-derived resins that are formulated using soybean oil and corn-derived ethanol. Combined with the use of low-emission MAXGUARD LE gelcoats, Campion pursues a “greenest-in-the-industry” goal.

The 825’s keel has Kevlar laminated in for added strength and puncture resistance.

The galley has an alcohol/electric stove top, refer and microwave all standard. Bow settee/berth is to the right.

Loaded with Standards

This pocket cruiser is loaded with so many items as standard that we normally find on the option list that it is too long to republish here and you should go to the builder's website for a complete list. Obviously these standards are important when comparing boats and boat prices. Here is a start on that list: 4-step swim ladder, electric head macerator, hot water shower system, wet bar and sink in the cockpit, trim tabs with indicators, engine room lighting, gray and black water holding tanks with indicators, hot/cold water transom shower. Incredibly, the boat comes standard with two Sunbrella Bimini tops with cruising canvas.

Options Available

The 825 is available with Volvo Penta 5.7 GXI DP (320-hp), 8.1 GI DP (375-hp), 8.1 GXI DP (420-hp), or D4 (260-hp) DP powered systems. Mercury 350, 377, 8.2 or 8.2 HO MAG power is also available.

The most popular power option for the Allante 825 is a Volvo 8.1 GXI DP (420-hp), which with the LX package which retails for about $122,073.

Unless you are going to be cruising in waters within a few latitudes of where the boats are built, the optional air conditioner might be welcome. So might the 5k Kohler generator for off-dock/at anchor power. If you plan to spend much time on the hook, the anchor package with auto windlass will be welcomed by guests pressed into anchor duty.

Campion Allante LX 825

The stand-up wet head is about what you'd expect on boats this size -- except for the good-looking solid-surface counter which looks like granite.

A VHF radio is a must-have safety option, and anglers will want the combination fish-finder/GPS offered. In addition to the stainless steel radar arch, the builder told us that one of the most popular options among Allante customers is a refrigerator to replace the standard ice-box in the cockpit’s wet bar. In this configuration owners use the upper fridge for drinks, the standard refrigerator in the cabin below for perishable food, and the portable cooler that stows under the port-side cockpit seat to transport food and drink to and from the boat.

Campion Allante LX 825

The Campion’s Apex hull incorporates a pad at the transom, designed to achieve quicker on-plane times, slightly higher WOT speed, and greater cruising fuel efficiency. The Bimini tops you see rolled up in this picture include cruising canvas -- all standard!

Observations

Campion has tried to build as big a boat as possible in 28 feet and we think they have succeeded. If you plan to trailer this boat, you be well advised to check on the state and provincial laws governing beam measurements, as at 9'4" (2.84 m) this boat is wider than the U.S. industry standard of 8'6" (2.59 m). Certainly professional trucking companies can move it anywhere in North America.

For boaters planning to keep their boat at a marina, or who will simply keep it on a trailer parked in a boatyard, the Allante 825 could be the best of both worlds -- a pocket cruiser with lots of room.

Putting the nav screen on the lid of the glove box at he helm is a bit unconventional, but Campion has gone to some trouble to do it so you can have both a glove box and a place for nav aids.

We like the concept of this boat and we wouldn't hesitate to take it from Vancouver up the Inside Passage to the panhandle of Alaska. And, for $122,000, that is about as good a cruising boat deal as you're likely to get.
