Boats are expensive, so why spend more than you have to? The Silverton 38 Sport Bridge costs substantially less than most of her competitors, sometimes enough less to buy you a Porsche. For more than 40 years, providing maximum value has been Silverton's business plan.

Silverton 38 Sport Bridge (2011-) Captain's Report

Silverton 38 Sport Bridge

The 38 Sport Bridge's stying is Mediterranean by way of New Jersey, with Italianate windows, a large flying bridge with an arch set way aft. A lower station is optional, but European buyers expect one. It takes away some living space from the salon, though.

Silverton 38 Sport Bridge

The main helm station is on the flying bridge, with a layout that seems a bit retro to us. But all the required instruments are there, with room for a multifunction unit (or, in this case, radar display) to port. We'd move the VHF and stereo and put a navigator to starboard of the wheel.

The 38 Sport Bridge, which became one of Silverton's best-selling models the year it was introduced, carries an MSRP of $404,740 w/twin 385-hp Crusader 8.1L MPI gas engines, $495,875 w/twin 380-hp Yanmar 6LY3-UTP diesels. Crusader 8.1L HOs, at 425-hp, and 440-hp Yanmar 6LY3-STPs are also available, as are 370-hp Volvo Penta D6s.

A wet bar is standard on the flying bridge, adjacent to a sunbather-friendly bench seat. The door behind the girl in blue leads onto a "gallery" for easy passage to the foredeck.

The Competition

How does this compare with other boats? A 2010 Sea Ray 390 Sedan Bridge, a little longer than the Silverton, more than a foot narrower and 4,900 lbs lighter, sells for around $528,000 with twin 364-hp CMD QSB 380 DTS diesels. A Meridian 391 Sedan Bridge, again longer and narrower than the Silverton, but about the same weight, costs about $540,000 with gas power, more than $620,000 with diesels. Like the Silverton, the Meridian is a two-stateroom boat with a split head – shower in one compartment, toilet and sink in another.

The sunpad is standard, and we like that it doesn't obscure the fore hatch. We also like the 1"-diameter stainless steel bow rail. The anchor roller is standard, a windlass optional.

All of these boats will let you and your family have fun on the water, but the Silverton leaves you some money for gas, or a year or two of college for your kid or, against the Meridian, that Porsche you've had your eye on.

Belowdecks

The Silverton has a basic two-stateroom, one-head layout like you'll find on many boats this size. The master is forward, with a double with innerspring mattress; the second cabin is tucked under the salon (the raised dinette adds some headroom), and has two single berths that can convert to a double.

Silverton 38 Sport Bridge

The raised dinette adds headroom to the guest stateroom below. The galley is an easy reach from the dinette and, if added, the lower helm, so folks will never be far from food.

There is a single head, but it's split between two compartments: The toilet and sink are to starboard, a stand-alone shower stall to port. Both have direct access from the master stateroom; the shower also has access from the guest cabin, while a second entrance to the toilet leads off the passageway from the salon. There are more doors here than in a French farce – not our choice of arrangement, but you should get used to it.

Silverton 38 Sport Bridge

The galley comes with Corian countertops, a microwave/convection oven, 2-burner electric range and dual-voltage refrigerator/freezer, all standard. A genset to run the appliances when underway is optional.

Silverton 38 Sport Bridge

The optional lower helm station takes up some of the dinette. Folks in colder climates will appreciate the ability to get off the flying bridge in bad weather, although a flying-bridge enclosure is also available.

Our Advice

Need you ask? We think the Silverton 38 Sport Bridge will meet the needs of many folks shopping for this type of boat, and save them a lot of money, too. Silverton 38 Sport Bridge
