The 23' (7 m) LOA 230 Seabreeze Fish from Cypress Cay is a pontoon squarely aimed at anglers. Cypress Cay 230 Seabreeze Fish (2011-) Captain's Report

Cypress Cay 230 Seabreeze Fish

Despite her name, the 230 Seabreeze Fish isn't strictly for anglers: She still has plenty of cruising amenities to keep the rest of the family happy. A Bimini top with quick-release struts is standard.

Start With a Cruiser

While creating the Fish from the cruising Seabreeze meant removing some seating, the fishing version still has an L-lounge amidships, with a table. All deck furniture sits on rotomolded structural bases; upholstery is marine vinyl with PreFixx protection. The deck is covered with True Mica carpeting. And yes, there's a stereo – a Seaworthy with two speakers and an MP3 input.

When not fishing, anglers can perch on the 'midships L-lounge with its vinyl upholstery and molded table with drinkholders. On the deck, carpet is standard, vinyl optional.

Add Fishing Gear

Cypress Cay includes just about all the fishing gear most anglers will want as standard. Rather than the fore and aft lounges on the cruising 230 Seabreeze, the Fish version has two pedestal seats at either end, with plenty of room around them for casting without hooking your fishing buddy. There are convenient rod holders and vertical racks, too, and a bench-style workstation aft for cutting bait, rigging lures and cleaning fish. We expect many fishermen will eat lunch here, too – there are built-in cupholders. An aerated livewell keeps bait spry until it ends up on the hook.

The workstation aft provides plenty of room for rigging baits and cleaning fish; Dad won't have to do it on the lounge table. There's stowage here, too.

Build Her Tough

The 230 Seabreeze Fish is sturdily built to handle higher speeds possible with max power. Her tubes are 5052 marine-grade aluminum with three sections each, so a puncture won't keep you from getting back home. Each tube also has a keel for impact protection, important for chasing fish into thin water. Full-length M-brackets on each pontoon and extruded aluminum cross members, carefully squared, ensure the tubes stay parallel even during hard running in rough water. (Cypress Cay calls this their Torsion Reduction System.) The deck is 7-ply pressure-treated plywood; the fence is aluminum panels over 1 ¼" anodized rails.

The helm console is fiberglass, with a single helm seat; there's a complete set of analog gauges with stainless bezels. No-feedback steering is standard.

Power and Options

Cypress Cay will rig your 230 Seabreeze Fish with Mercury or Honda four-stroke outboards from 9.9-hp to 115-hp, or two-stroke Mercury OptiMax engines of 75-, 90- or 115-hp. The company recommends adding optional lifting strakes to improve handling with 90-hp or higher. We haven't tested the boat so can't comment on speeds specifically.

When the fish stop biting and it's time for a swim, this three-step stern ladder will come in handy. An upgraded version with a platform is optional.

Other than power, the main fishing options are a fishfinder/depthsounder and rigging for a trolling motor. And there's the usual selection of comfort upgrades, a mooring cover and a choice of three color schemes. We rigged a hypothetical 230 Seabreeze Fish with a 75-hp Mercury OB ($20,000), all fishing options, an upgraded swim ladder, the lifting strakes and a mooring cover and our bottom line came in at $22,360 MSRP. We think that's a pretty good deal for a well-built pontoon fully rigged for serious fishing.
