Monterey 214 FS (2009-) Captain's Report

Monterey 214 FS

Optioned out, the Monterey 214FS makes a powerful case for towing sports.

For anyone who views boating as an active sport—not just lumbering from launch ramp to drinking port or lazing along with your favorite slurpy—the Monterey 214FS Sport Boat might be right up your alley. This stylish, perky bowrider was designed primarily as a tow vehicle for wakeboarders, skiers or those who fancy hearing their children beg for mercy hanging on for dear life to the doughnut or banana in a high-speed, high-G (but careful) turn. With its aggressively sporty attitude and two sun worshipping cockpits, the Monterey 214FS Sport Boat is best suited for the young at heart, mind and body. Best leave Granny home to bake the cookies.

Monterey 214 FS

The Monterey 214FS seats eight adults between bow, the helm and stern.

Under the Sun

Bowriders by their very nature are made for maximum enjoyment of the elements—provided it’s not cloudy or cold or raining. Monterey makes a cuddy version for people who like to hedge the weather or who like someplace private to, er, cuddle. But the 214FS seems best-suited in its open-to-the-full-glory-of-the-sun configuration.

With enough sunscreen on board, this thing will accommodate up to eight adults between its open-bow seating, its pair of swiveling buckets with flip-up at the helm and its wraparound lounge aft. Take a good look at this wrap around bench stern seating as it is one of the most attractive designs we have seen in this size boat.

Equipment

Standard cockpit equipment includes a 25-quart carry-on cooler and two other molded-in ice chests, courtesy lighting and a staggering 10 drink holders. Options include snap-in carpeting, a cockpit table with side-mount base and a bevy of canvas and enclosure options depending on whether the optional wakeboard tower is installed.

Monterey 214 FS

Easy access from the water is a key component of towee safety and happiness. We prefer four rungs on the swim ladder to the three seen here.

Towing the Line

Since the Monterey 214FS Sport Boat was designed for towing, there are, of course, ample tie-ins for ropes and ladder access onto the swim platform and transom walkthrough access to the cockpit.

Stowing gear for a happy day of active boating is likely no more difficult than on any boat of similar scale and arrangement. Skis stow under the cockpit sole in a locker with a gas-assisted hatch. Those who carry inflatable toys will take up space however, so be prepared to cut back on crew.

Wakeboard enthusiasts naturally will want the optional tower, which, of course, will mount gear as well.

Monterey 214 FS

Nothing fancy here, which is a good thing. Your eyes should be focused ahead when towing, with your spotter watching the towee.

Helm Hath No Fury

The 214FS Sport Boat’s helm bears a strong resemblance to the dash of a new-generation VW Beetle. It’s simple and functional with fog-resistant gauges backlit for evening runs back to the ramp. There is little-to-no space for a modern navigation/charting unit—something some of us have on our jon boats—but then, a simple magnetic compass is an add-on to the boat’s $35,122 base price.

No Performance Anxiety

The 214FS is available with a range of MerCruiser stern drive engines. The 4.3-liter, 190-hp Alpha 1 is standard. Capt. Steve tested the boat last week, running her with a 220-hp, 5.0 liter V-8 with just under half the 55-gallon fuel capacity and no water on board. Best cruise was 3200 rpm, which generated a speed of 32 mph and a fuel burn of 8.9 gph.

Speed at WOT was about 46 mph. Time to plane was 4.3 seconds and the boat made 0 to 30 mph in about 8 seconds—all good for towing sports.

Based on these numbers, and if you plan to have a gaggle of friends on board, we would opt for this engine over the 190-hp standard offering. This boat is not a “starter” or entry level boat, and is certainly a couple of steps up from that. Feedback we have gotten from Monterey owners has all been positive. We’d say you should put the Monterey 214FS on your short list.
