Hargrave Sassy

For owners of large motoryachts there is nothing quite so elegant as a master stateroom on the main deck. They are typically found only on 150-footers or larger, but the owners of this boat decided that they would like one in a mere 100-footer. The vessel has two masters – oh, the lucky guests!

Building a custom yacht means that decisions must be made not only as to the size and layout of the boat, but also about its functionality, personality, appearance, utility and overall performance in every sense of the word. The pictures on this page are of the 100’ Hargrave Sassy, the second Hargrave built by a Michigan couple with a large family who love cruising the Great Lakes and now look forward to more distant horizons. Previous yacht ownership had taught this family many lessons about boats and all of them were brought to bear when this very personalized yacht was conceived.

The owners of Sassy worked closely with Shelley DiCondina and her design team at Yacht Interiors by Shelley in Ft. Lauderdale. They clearly understood what it took to meet the owners’ dreams and aspirations for this, their second Hargrave motoryacht.

At first glance when you look at the pictures on this page you might think that the boat is “plain and unremarkable.” In fact, it is a study in graceful functionality, enduring design, and clearly the owners had a strong grasp of the design trends of yacht interiors being commissioned in Europe, the heartland of superyachts. Having said that, our guess is that they want people on first seeing the boat to think that is “plain and unremarkable.” Read on, and you’ll see what we mean and why.

Hargrave Sassy

The entrance to virtually every large motoryacht is through the doors, usually sliding, leading from the aft deck to the main saloon. This is where guests get their first impression of the yacht and it should signal the character of the whole vessel – and that of the owner, as well! Sassy’s owners wanted to portray a modern, tasteful, but not a garish, ostentatious yacht. Note that a single earth-tone beige color stretches from the carpet, to the sofa, to the Majilite Legend fabric covering the bulkheads and to the overhead. This monochromatic treatment is accented by the gloss cherry wood on the furniture, mullions, cabinets and even on the soffit in the overhead. Overall this saloon exudes a constraint rarely seen on 100’ motoryachts.

Hargrave Sassy

Whether or not there is a bar in the main saloon says a lot about the function of a boat. A bar usually means one of the prime missions of the vessel is for entertainment of guests. A bar is a place that encourages people to socialize intimately. Note that the large flat screen in the corner of the saloon is not hidden as it is on many large yachts. The decision to select this treatment usually means that the owners want to encourage guests to watch TV, entertain themselves if they wish, and that the vessel is intended for relaxed fun – bring out the corn chips and guacamole!

Hargrave Sassy

This is a large dining area, there is seating for eight, and the table can be expanded to easily seat 10 or 12 people. The owners wanted a dining area that was not stiff and intimidating, so guests could feel relaxed and the table could be a venue appropriate for a casual breakfast as well as for a dinner party. Note that a huge mirror has been placed on the forward bulkhead so that all of the guests have a view to water scenes outside the boat. This is a thoughtful and innovative touch, as we often see an étagère placed here full of glassware and bric-a-brac. This design decision is an interesting combination of functionality and lack of pretension.

Hargrave Sassy

The galley is forward of the dining area. The concept of this galley is to be a working one as opposed to being a “country kitchen” where guests are encouraged to mingle with the cook, help themselves to the contents of the refer or even lend a hand in the galley chores. What you see above is how most Europeans approach a galley – a place for the paid staff and master of the ship only. Yet, unlike most European galleys we have seen, this one has a huge amount of counter space, enough, in fact, to be able to plate 12 people at once. Note the large deck-to-overhead pantry in the background and all of the overhead storage. The counters are Kodiak Granite instead of stainless steel to keep the galley from having an institutional feel. Note that there are two sinks and two food prep areas, two large ovens, a huge Sub Zero Refer with French doors above and four freezer drawers below. The counters all have 4” granite back splashes, and a polished stainless steel mirror in the background (at right) opens up the whole space. A European staff should be so lucky as to have a galley as thoughtfully designed as is this one.

Hargrave Sassy

This is the traditional full-beam master stateroom below deck. The beige tones with gloss cherry wood theme established in the main saloon is carried on in the accommodations section of the boat. Note the low-key approach to this master – or masterly VIP, take your pick – as there is no “queen-for-a-day” overhead treatment above the bed, nor a mirror or erotic art above the headboard; in fact, there is no headboard at all. The owner of this boat wants to exude tasteful functionality without a display of opulence. This is a key element of the boat and is an important clue as to the character and temperament of the owners. Look carefully at the large oval portlights in the background and you will note that they are both opening ports. This is great for fresh air -- and for safety. There must be emergency egress routes below deck on all yachts.

Hargrave Sassy

The 100’ Hargrave Sassy is intended for serious work and entertaining wherever she goes. The hardtop with retractable fabric skylight is one of the largest we have seen on any boat under 150’ and guarantees that even a large party of guests will be able to pick sun or shade. The Jacuzzi hot tub, bar and ample lounge on the flying bridge all go to creating an exciting entertainment center on the boat. Note that there is no traditional RIB tender, but rather a Sea-Doo watercraft with wakeboard towing tower as well as two PWCs. Our guess is that this yacht will be the mothership for a lot of watersports fun. This vessel will make a great charter boat both in the U.S. and in the Med.

We have never met the owners of the Hargrave Sassy, but based on what we have seen in the photos above we think we have a good line on their approach to boating. Clearly they can afford the millions of dollars it takes to build such a vessel ($7.2 million will buy this boat), they thoroughly enjoy all of the pleasures that kind of money can buy, but they do not want to emphasize their wealth and are not trying to impress anyone with their good fortune. Rather, they love the sea and what a family which is blessed can do on it with the right platform. This is a family yacht built by people who are modest and are very secure about their position in the overall scheme of life.
