Last year we had the opportunity to test Edgewater’s new 225 Center Console which was an impressive high bow design with excellent construction. This year they have unveiled the sister ship to the center console, the 255 EX. Using the same hull design and incorporating a unique and functional express deck mold, the 225 EX is likely to become one of the most sought after small expresses in the market today.
The 225 EX boasts of extra room and a big boat ride that will leave most other cuddys in its wake. This layout can realistically extend your fishing season thanks in part to the cuddy that is big enough for two to sleep comfortably for two nights and the hull design that features an exceptionally high bow keeping wind and seas where they belong, not to mention the optional hardtop, with the optional enclosure makes one fine combination that will keep you dry and warm. Edgewater uses a system of construction called “The Edge” which stands for Engineering & Design Guided by Excellence. This no-nonsense approach to boat building uses state of the art design and construction technology in conjunction with the best materials available today to produce a wood free hull that carries a LIFETIME warranty. The 225 EX is also fully foamed and unsinkable, an Edgewater trademark.
With a transom height of 25” and a full height 28 gallon live well tucked into the port transom corner, the 225 EX is a fishing machine. The roomy 46 square foot cockpit gives you lots of room to work a trophy fish and the optional rear bench folds down out of the way when the tournament begins. Other standards include a saltwater washdown, flush mounted gunnel rod holders, rod racks under each gunnel, and oversized scuppers. An optional double wide helm seat console contains an internal fish box although we found the access to this compartment to be too small for decent sized offshore pelagics.
The helm has plenty of room to mount all your favorite navigational electronics and the tilt wheel and hydraulic steering are standard. Just opposite the helm is a great network of storage compartments that are unparalleled by any manufacturer. Here you’ll find plenty of room for gear, tackle, provisions, and even a small waste compartment. There’s even a dedicated spot for a 25-quart Igloo cooler.
Most cuddys in this size category are cramped and uncomfortable but the 225 EX has 65 inches of head room, a six foot long V-berth that converts to a settee with a table insert, a fresh water sink and icebox, a ventilation hatch overhead, and a hide away porti potti just beneath the steps into the cuddy. Without any doubt this cuddy is roomy and functional.
The Edgewater 225 EX offers a 22’6” overall length and a wide 8’6” beam. The standard 135-gallon fuel cell provides excellent range for blue water fishing, especially when paired with Yamaha’s 200 HPDI or either the Optimax or Ficht injection technology. The 17-inch draft and 3,400 pound displacement afford plenty of beef below the waterline to help tame the seas when the wind kicks up.
This boat will run a brisk cruise of 26.3 mph turning 3500 rpm and burning only 7.1 gallons per hour, for a net of 3.7 miles per gallon! This provides a range in excess of 400 miles with the standard 135-gallon fuel tank. Top speed was also impressive at 42.3 mph enabling you to outrun almost any storm.
The Edgewater 225EX is a very impressive boat with great handling, performance, and economy. With the comfortable cuddy and roomy cockpit for fishing, it is likely that this will become one of the most sought after small cuddys for years to come.
