Four Winns 47 Excalibur (Not in Production) Captain's Report

If you’re the type of boater that likes to go fast, and likes to look good going fast, but aren’t willing to compromise your comfort level, the new Wellcraft 47 Excalibur is truly the definition of a high performance cruiser.

Wellcraft has a proven and long standing reputation for producing high performance boats and the 47 Excalibur is no exception. Her sleek lines and performance hull race across the water effortlessly making a statement of power and attitude while her accommodations and comfort make her a first class cruiser.

At the bow. there’s a molded in anchor roller and anchor that neatly couple to a windlass and anchor locker by way of a recessed anchor line chute, a definite safety feature and nicely done so that the deck seems uninterrupted. The fore deck is completely non-skidded and features high stainless steel bow rails for added security. The huge foredeck has three Bomar translucent hatches that pump light into the cabin and a large sun pad that’s big enough for a number of sun worshipers.

The cockpit has great access to the foredeck using molded steps and a walkthrough windshield. The helm is the command center of the vessel featuring easy to read racing style gauges, the latest in Mercury throttle design, a tilt sport steering wheel, a graphite dash with system monitor, remote spotlight, trim tab indicator, stereo remote, digital depth, fuel gauge, and Raytheon GPS plotter all at your fingertips. The helm seat itself is electric as well. Moving aft, the cockpit is open and large featuring a wet bar with refrigerator, ice maker, and sink. The aft bench has a huge storage bin beneath and the cockpit table is removable as well. The essential switches and battery charger are located here in this locker, and the transom features this large storage locker that’s perfect for lines and fenders. There’s also an integral dive ladder in the swim platform for easy boarding.

There’s plenty of room in the 47 Excalibur’s engine compartment to perform routine maintenance. Each engine is mounted with access on all sides of the motor making everything easily accessible.

Our test vessel featured twin Mercury 496 Mags but there are many other power options available. Those Mercs really have a lot of power and the use of the duoprop outdrives was a great combination not only for top end, but performance as well. A hull of this size with straight inboards will tend to roll about 25 degrees in a hard turn but with the outdrives the hull is torqued an additional 15 degrees adding to the performance and tracking of the hull through a hard turn. The only downside to the drives is that if you are used to running twin inboards, be sure to have the drives straight when docking or using reverse gears to maneuver the vessel.

The salon is spacious with and L-shaped lounge to starboard and bright skylights that fill the interior with natural light. The master stateroom is forward and features an island berth and stately appointments. The master head is ensuite and features a fully enclosed shower stall.

The galley is a great food prep area with a large counter, sink, microwave, and solid surface stovetop. The refrigerator /freezer is adjacent to the galley and is oversized as well.

The aft cabin is unique featuring a single berth and a double berth. Granted that the three berths are only suitable for siblings or a small family, but still are a welcome increase in sleeping accommodations.

With a length of 49, 1”, beam of 12’4”, and a dry weight of only 17, 637 pounds, the 47 Excalibur is a very nimble craft due to the dual outdrives that torque the hull for better turning. Out on our test track we throttled the 47 Excalibur to a top speed of 48.8 mph with a decibel reading of 91. The best cruise speed was clocked at 31.9 mph giving us a range of 247 miles on one fuel tank holding 292 gallons. Her time to plane was impressive too at only 6.6 seconds.

Superb style, race boat backbone, and performance equate to a high performance cruiser, and when you think high performance cruiser, think Wellcraft 47 Excalibur.
