Henriques 35 Express Captain's Report

An Exciting Semi-Custom Sportfisher

By Capt. Randy Emmermann

The Henriques 35 Express is designed for the serious sportfishing angler. This company has been building semi-custom yachts since 1977 and with 30 years experience you can bet they’ve installed the right equipment and design requirements to meet all your fishing needs.

The 35 Express falls in the middle of the Henriques line up. The hull design is derived from the time proven soft ride of its sister the 38 Express. She measure 38 feet 3 inches with the bow pulpit and has a 13 foot beam. The draft is 42 inches and she carries 365 gallons of diesel and 65 gallons of water. The 35 is a stout boat with a dry weight of 21,000 lbs.

Many of the best sportfishing boats come from the coast of New Jersey, where boats are designed and tested in some of the most hostile waters in the North Atlantic.

Fishing Room and Features

The cockpit on the 35 measures 100 square feet, which means you have lots of room for tournaments in this unencumbered space along with 2 built in fish boxes. In addition, there is a livewell with salt and fresh water washdown, a sink, and a tackle center with drawers. The livewell is deep, rounded, and molded into the center of the transom. I really liked the non-skid cockpit floor which is reinforced to accommodate a custom fighting chair of your choice. There’s a large tuna door with heavy-duty hardware, and to complete the cockpit area Henriques has bolsters all around and self-draining vents to both port and starboard. These along with outriggers are all prerequisites for a successful fishing experience.

The Helm Station

The helm offers good open space and puts the captain in the middle of all the action. Henriques offers a stainless steel wheel, electronics and analog gauges along with a large space for extra flush mounted electronics of your choice. The Cummins 420 QSB had an electric throttle/shifter and a built-in sync. The captain’s seat is accompanied by a bench seat to port and one to aft. Each has adequate storage for fishing gear and a comfortable place to retreat from the sun. The hardtop and the enclosure will help keep you dry on those blustery days or in heavy sea conditions.

Moving up towards the bow we see it’s covered in non-skid and wrapped by thick gauge aluminum rails. The bow pulpit holds the anchor followed by a sizeable line locker and optional windlass.

Our test boat had a custom aluminum half tower, which not only helped to enhance the look and lines of this sportfish, but also offered a 360-degree view. This elevated view is spectacular and will help assist in locating bait fish, game fish and running tunas.

Moving Below Deck

The cabin, like the rest of the boat is semi-custom, which means each buyer has the option to work with the manufacturer to create the ultimate fishing machine. Our test boat had a beautiful teak interior with a teak and holly floor. Moving forward on the boat there a is a V-berth in the bow which can be converted into full overnight accommodations with filler cushions.

The galley comes complete with microwave, large sink, teak cabinets, stovetop, and refrigerator. Opposite of the galley is the entertainment center with table and lounge which can also be converted to upper and lower bunks. The head features an electric flush head with holding tank, macerator and Y valve. There’s a mirrored vanity, storage cabinets, and shower with molded fiberglass pan and drain.

Performance

The Henriques 35 was powered by twin 420–hp QSB Cummins diesels. This power package was quick and responsive. We reached a top speed of 36.2 mph at a full throttle of 2970 rpm. Depending on your cruising preference you could run the boat between 24-29 mph, or 21-25 knots. Our best cruise was around 29.8 mph at 2500 rpm, which gave us a cruising range of 340 miles on a full tank. This provides plenty of range to reach the canyons, fish all day and return to port with fuel to spare.
