Glacier Bay 2690 Coastal Runner Captain's Report

Cat Built to Thrive in all Seasons

By Capt. Rob Smith

The new 2690 carries many of the features of a tricked-out 2685 as standard equipment. She is built for long-range cruising and will be very comfortable, even in the chilly climates of the Alaskan frontier. The Alaskan enclosure creates a watertight cockpit you can enjoy, even when it is inclement outside. If you truly enjoy the long-range aspect of cruising, add a generator and air conditioning and world is at your command. Foam filled hulls help insure an extra margin of safety and security. Even with the full enclosed cockpit, you still have an aft deck for working fish and crab pots with ease.

In the Cockpit

Stepping on board, you have wide gunwale tops with aggressive grip surfaces. These gunwales have rod holders for trailing a line behind you and hawsepipes that bring the dock lines in cleanly to cleats mounted on the gunwales. Racks integrated in the gunwales keep your rods arranged orderly and ready for action. Another advantage of wide gunwale tops is the added balance of toekick space.

In the aft cockpit, the boat’s raised fiberglass bait station includes a pull-out sprayer and sink. Over on the starboard side is a handy bait cutting board with hook, knife and tool organizer. Below the cutting board, four tackle boxes are behind a panel door so you can keep your parts ready to make the next leader, or add a special lure to tease the fish. Near the deck on both sides are panels for access to the fuel/water separators and engine connections. The battery management panel is in the center at the step-over to the swim platform.

The swim platform is a popular option. It has high rails and a concealed three-step swim ladder to make getting on board after a swim simple. Even if you have dive gear or spear fishing gear on, you will find plenty of room to come aboard with minimal help.

At the Bow

Going forward, you have high safety rails to the bow from the steps up in the cockpit to the optional bow pulpit up front. Ours had the optional pulpit with optional Lewmar windlass. The lockers up front are huge and will be handy to store docking lines and fenders as well as anchor gear. You can relax with your coffee in the mornings on the cushion up front or watch a sunset with your partner with your favorite cold beverage. The extended hard top is already reinforced with flats for radar and antennas.

Any-Weather Boat

Back in the cockpit, the Alaskan enclosure expands the opportunity and the season with a watertight door and sliding side windows and 360-degree visibility inside. The tinted windshield has dual wipers to clear away rain and spray and dual hatches in the hardtop bring in natural light and fresh air. The starboard galley has cabinets with sea rails to keep loose items from getting dumped onto the deck in swells.

The stainless steel sink has a pull-out sprayer, and you have more storage under the sink. A set of drawers is just aft of the sink. The dinette table is on the port side and designed for multi-functional use. The forward bench seat back can be placed to face forward while underway, aft while having an intimate dinner or it can be removed to add space for a converted topside sleeper. The Norcold refrigerator is tucked under the forward bench and some dry storage space is under the table and the aft bench.

In the Cabin

There is a nice queen cuddy bed with rod racks and reading lights. The breaker panel and an A/C outlet are just inside the cabin so you can quickly reach them from the cockpit when needed, as well as a two- color light with red for running at night and white for dressing, reading or relaxing. The porta potty is mounted forward on the port side and the sink with pull-out shower and medicine cabinet are just aft of the entrance steps. On the starboard side under the mattress is storage space as well as the water heater. Snap-in covers allow quick access to wiring at the helm.

Specs and Performance

The 2690 Coastal Runner measures 26’1” length overall with a beam of 8’9”. She tips the scales at 5,790 lbs. dry and is rated for a maximum of twin 150-hp outboards. She carries up to 180 gallons of fuel and draws only 21” with her outboards trimmed up. We tested on a calm day in a bay in the northeast. While we couldn’t test her ability to handle swells and chop, we did find she handled smoothly with great turns at speed and great maneuverability around the docks. Her top speed was 36.7 mph and her cruise speed was 16.1 mph at 3000 rpm. She is on plane in 5.4 seconds and up to 30 mph in 8.6 seconds.

If the cruising style of life is appealing to you, I believe the safety, comfort and durability of Glacier Bay’s 2690 Coastal will deliver a limitless area for you to roam.
