Hull Number 1: Bentley’s 184 4 Point Fish

A Pontoon Perfect for Fishing and Cruising

By Capt. Bob Smith

We chose a very chilly day in late December to test the 184 4 Point Fish by Bentley for you. While we had to wait for the frost to burn off, I had a chance to check out some of the features of this new pontoon fishing boat they just pulled from the line. It was hull number one of what I am sure will be a long, good selling model for them.

Fishing Forward

From the side entry gates forward is a huge fishing deck so two can cast simultaneously and not worry too much about getting entangled. A fishing chair easily fits into bases on either side up front, and the corners have pods complete with drinkholders and fishing rod holders easily bolt onto the sides. The front entry gate is wheelchair width and side entry gates are plenty large at 31”. The starboard side gate has two receivers in the opening for the flip-out swim ladder to firmly be placed. You won’t have to worry about it slipping or having to climb all the way up the side of the boat to get on board.

Standard blue docking lights and navigation lights are also on each side in the front. Comfortable, plush patterned carpet protects bare feet as you move around on the deck.

At the Controls

The helm station is not your typical pontoon navigation station with a bench seat; the 184 is equipped with bucket seat and the burlwood-looking insert panels dress-up the helm with analog gauges arranged across the top for easy view underway. The standard JBL sound system is just to the left of the wheel. Rocker switches just above have easy to read international symbols on them as well as labels. For powering your portable gear, a 12volt socket is just to the right of the wheel. Two small trays on the right side provide a great place for small items. The low profile windshield offers good protection from the chilly morning air and has drinkholders on either end for your morning coffee or afternoon beverage. Underneath the helm is a large storage area with a double-gasketed door to keep the items drier and to prevent noisy doors underway.

The bimini drops down for a changing room and Porta-Potti, although it was not on the one we tested. Across from the helm is a large bench seat and at the aft end of the bench is a lounger back for catching rays at anchor. Drinkholders are located at the ends of this seat and the speakers are mounted in the roto-molded base. The forward section of the seat bottom is an aerated livewell to keep your fish and bait fresh. The aft section is plenty large to store the life jackets close when needed.

Most of the time, I find the aft sections cramped and hard to fish from, but the stern casting deck is also large. The 184 4 Point gives you four great points to fish from. Fishing chairs fit neatly into bases on either corner of the back or you can choose to leave them on the dock which will maximize room to move around and work the fish at the stern. Over the rail in the back is the 22 gallon external fuel tank. The battery is located high, next to the tank with the battery switch at the top of the rail.

Specifics and Performance

The 184 4 Point Fish has a deck length of 18’0’’ with a deck width of 8’6”.

We tested the 184 in very chilly conditions with a lot of wind. She handled very well and even in these conditions gave us dry ride. She was comfortable and easy to maneuver in both deep and shallow waters proving she is a capable fishing platform. The 184 4 Point Fish reached 20 mph in 8.6 seconds with a cruising speed of about 7.3mph. At cruise, she delivers about 144 miles on a full tank of fuel.

Pontoon boats are great for fishing and the 184 is well-suited for the family that loves to cruise and fish. She is easy to tow behind most family vehicles and has the room for at least four to fish at a time.
