Instead of a walkthrough at the stern, like other boats, there is a lift-up panel that forms the center section of the aft sundeck.

Glastron GXL 235 (2007-) Captain's Report

Sophisticated Performer

Thoughtful design and attention to detail make this GXL 235 a bowrider to look out for.

By Captain Keith Burton

Experienced boat owners considering an upscale and larger runabout are often faced with a bewildering number of choices from boating manufacturers. We will save you some time. Glastron’s GXL 235 is a large 23-foot bowrider that offers the style and performance you expect in a sophisticated performance boat.

Popular Design

The GXL line from Glastron is the company’s premium line of boats. That means you get the best materials, a huge list of standard features and truly great over-the-water performance. Glastron’s nearly 50 years of experience in building fiberglass boats really is evident in the GXL 235, which is packed with style and innovations. The GXL 235 is a wide beam bowrider, at 102-inches, which translates into an extremely roomy boat with expansive seating and floor space throughout. The boat’s attractive bow features nicely sculpted wraparound seating that can be expanded into a full sun lounge by inserting a cushion over the footwell. The sun pad is supported by strong stainless steel rods that mount in insets molded underneath the upper edges of the port and starboard bow seats. Docking lamps with stainless steel housings are mounted in the hull at the bow and add a luxury look to this boat and are practical for those trips over the water at night. As you would expect in a premium boat, stainless steel fittings, such as hinges and handholds are used throughout and include pop-up cleats.

Behind the Wheel

The helm features sporty black on white gauges with chrome trim rings set in an attractive burlwood dash. The gauges are all easy to see and are augmented by lighted rocker switches that control the auxiliary electrics. Both the captain’s and passenger bucket seats swivel and slide forward and back, and have a built-in lift-up bolster. We found them very comfortable even over extended periods. The GXL 235 also includes a marine-grade AM/FM/CD Sirius satellite radio, that is protected in a large passenger side compartment at the dash. Snap-in carpet is used throughout. The fiberglass floor has strategically placed drains to help keep the floor dry. A large in-deck storage compartment has plenty of room for skis and wake boards.

Plenty of Room

Aft seating is an expansive U-shaped bench seat with plenty of storage below in lined and drained compartments. Just like at the bow, you can turn the seats into a huge onboard sun pad by installing inserts. This is truly a boat sun-lovers would enjoy as there is also a full width sundeck at the stern. Finishing out the GXL 235 is a large integrated ski platform with a fold out stainless steel ladder. Getting aboard shows off some innovative thinking by Glastron’s engineers; instead of a walkthrough at the stern, like other boats, there is a lift-up panel that forms the center section of the aft sundeck. The center rear bench seat cushion can be removed and you have a non-skid step. This way you don’t lose the seating that other boats have with a walkthrough at the transom. The lift-up section also maintains the sleek look of this boat’s interior.

Handling and Performance

Over the water performance of the GXL 235 is truly impressive. Our boat was equipped with a 300-horsepower MerCruiser 350 Magnum MPI Bravo. With that engine, we recorded an effortless top speed of 55.6 miles-per-hour at 5000 rpm. As you can see, for a large bowrider, this is a fast boat. But speed only tells part of the story.

This boat has a terrific solid feel at the helm and handles rough water and moderate wakes without dramatics. We credit the extremely solid construction from Glastron’s state-of-the-art manufacturing process at their high-tech factory in Little Falls, Minnesota, and the unitized deck and floor. The unitized deck and floor maximizes the strength of this boat, which results in less vibration and noise. You can really tell the difference.

If you get the impression that we liked this boat, you are quite right. The Glastron GXL 235 is stylish, roomy, and has a feel of quality that would make this boat an excellent choice for anyone looking for a large premium runabout, that offers more than a good measure of performance.
