For 2009, Seaswirl “upscaled” the 2101 Dual Console. Seaswirl likes to say they build SUV’s for the water because you can do so much on them. They also build them to be more affordable with standard features that will put a smile on your face. The 2101 is a good family boat that will allow you to fish, ski or just enjoy the day on the water near shore, in a bay, on a river, or on a lake. She is easy enough to handle that your 12 year old daughter will battle with her 14 year old brother to take the helm.
This boat has an impressive sized head in the port console that an adult can actually fit in, high interior freeboard for fishing and for keeping the crew safely onboard, and 105 gallons fuel capacity to take you just about anywhere without plotting fuel stops along the way. She looks like a bowrider ski boat, but is a fishing rig at heart.
Seaswirl Striper 2101 Dual Console
By Capt. Rob Smith
I spent an afternoon driving the 2101 Dual Console around the Intracoastal waterways of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This model has been on just about every kind of water there is, even offshore. Now, I wouldn’t go telling you to cross the Stream in this model, but it seems it would be capable, I just believe that a 2605 Walk Around would be better for that! In any case, I certainly can see it in Florida, New England, California, or even over in Europe. It seems to be quite a versatile craft with both family and fishing features.
Up Front
The bow of the 2101 Dual Console for 2009 now sports pull-up cleats that are more aesthetically pleasing, and much better at not tangling the lines on a fishing boat. Also more reminiscent of a fishing rig is the integrated bow pulpit with standard anchor roller and line locker. Rails are recessed also to keep the gunwales line-friendly. Seating is 30 oz. marine grade UV protected vinyl that is easy to clean and seems pretty kid friendly. Even with my large framed body in the bow, you could put another adult and child up front with me. Seaswirl does offer an optional filler cushion for the bow. Cushions snap into place, although I had some trouble with my big fingers getting a few of them to snap together easily. The bench seats double as insulated lockers. Seaswirl glasses the Fibercore one piece stringers in and fills all the voids possible with closed cell flotation foam which adds strength, flotation, noise reduction and insulation.
Moving on Back
The sport windshield is tempered glass ski boat style with a center pass-through. The sole locker has a macerator for easy clean up when used as a fish locker. The locker is big enough for me to lie down inside! The port console is a changing room that will surprise you with her size. Mom can get in here and change into clothes for dinner if she needs to. A porta-potti can fit in here easily. I was sitting inside there and didn’t feel like an anchovy in a tin can. There was about 47” sole to cabin top and 30” width inside.
The helm was pretty well laid out with instruments and switches grouped together to the left side. The right side was inset and looks like it can handle a fishfinder/GPS or another small to medium flat panel display. The horn switch was behind the wheel, but that can probably be moved to the outboard end of the panel. Trim tabs are available if you want them. With the curves and angles on the dash, they end up a little low, but I found I really didn’t need to use them when I tested. The footrest was perfectly angled and at the right height for me at 6’.
Cockpit Fishing Room
The cockpit of the 2101 Dual Console really reminded me of one of their larger center consoles or walkarounds in the room it has. Seaswirl offers a sleeper seat for the port/companion seat. With the standard Pompanette ladder back seat, I found about 81” gunwale to gunwale and 57” from the stern to the seat back of the helm. Cockpit depth was better than average, especially for a runabout style, at 25 ½”. You’ll be able to lean into the fish when you need to and little Johnny will have to be good at the high jump to get out. Rod racks are under the gunwales and rod holders are flush mounted in the top of the broad anti-skid surfaces on port and starboard. Jump seats are optional in both corners aft. A fresh water washdown is also available. There isn’t a transom door, but it is easy enough to swing a leg over the port side of the transom and get to the swim ladder. The center of the stern has a 30 gallon aerated livewell with high speed pickup. Under the corners of the stern are hatches for access to batteries, battery switches and fuel/water separator. The only thing I would like to see, and Seaswirl promises, is the fuel/water separator moved to a more convenient location to service it. It is well back under the starboard corner inside the stern.
Statistics
The 2101 Dual Console for 2009 measures 21’6” length overall with a beam of 8’6”. She weighs in at 3280 lbs. and carries a fuel load of 105 gallons. Draft is about 13” and total capacity is 1625 lbs. people and gear. Standard horsepower is 150-hp outboards and maximum is 225-hp outboards.
Test Results
Testing conditions were more like a rubber duck in a washing machine, but I never got any spray over the bow rails. The strakes and chines did their job and she cornered nicely. She was on plane in 3.7 seconds and up to 30 mph in 6.9 seconds. The most economical speed was 30 mph where she burned 8.6 gph for a full tank range of 328 miles. I registered a top speed of 46.4 mph and was told that the Yamaha engineers got it up to 50 mph in better conditions on a fresh water river. She docks easy enough for single-handing.
Conclusion
It seems Seaswirl has improved on this model and it certainly has something for everyone in the family. It is more family than fishing, but capable of both. How many family boats have a 30 gallon livewell in the stern? She is roomy inside the cockpit for the fishing side and has seating up front for the family. Of course, you will have to see if it fits your style of boating, but be prepared to save some money over what you thought it might cost!
