Doral 200 Sunquest (gas) Captain's Report

Tested By Capt. Bob Smith

While some Canadians come to my home state of Florida to get out of the chilly winters, I thought it would be a grand idea to come to Canada to escape the heat of Florida in the summer. Was I Wrong! While the temperatures drifted around 70 degrees in the morning, it climbed to challenge the temperatures in Tampa for the summer. We had a great time, though.

Doral seems to have a sharp eye towards building a boat that will be in the family for a long time and that is competitive with the market leaders of today. I tested both the diesel model of the 200 SunQuest and its sister the gas version. I was impressed with both versions and would have a hard time deciding on which one I would take if offered. Well, they never offered to give me one anyway, but it would have been difficult to choose anyway.

As with most everything Doral does, they use 316 grade stainless steel in gunwale molding, oversized cleats, ski tow eyes and other marine hardware. This means you will get better durability and expect less corrosion problems on these critical components. Bow seating is comfortable with deluxe upholstery with textured inserts. Stainless steel grab rails are within easy reach if you choose to ride up front. Under the bow seats you have plenty of storage space. The aft lounge seat is sculpted rather than just a straight boring bench seat. Of course, under the bench you have more storage. Beverage holders are peppered throughout the layout for you and all your guests. Ski storage is in the floor in a lined storage space and is vented to allow the humidity to escape. In the cockpit, you have a companion station with lockable glove box. Elegant looking wood accents really add to the fine looks aboard. Swivel and slide adjustments make the seats most comfortable for the long rides. Side pockets allow you keep long items close at hand and not on the floor where they can get in the way.

This model is 19’2” without the swim platform and 21’8” when you add the platform to the overall length. She measures 8 feet in the beam and needs 20 inches of water with the drive up and 34 inches with the drive down. Her weight is around 2800 lbs. and she carries up to 31 gallons of fuel on board. The 200 SunQuest has a sporty 16 degree deadrise which helps deliver a dry and sporty ride. This year you have four choices for exterior colors; champagne, Doral Deep Blue, Doral Deep Black and Torch Red. Canvas colors are Champagne, Charcoal and Doral Deep Blue.

Performance and Ride

The 200 SunQuest was a sporty performer. This model was tested with a 220-hp MerCruiser 4.3 MPI sterndrive with Alpha One outdrive. Our test boat had a full tank of fuel and two people on board and the wind was blowing around 10 knots and we had about a foot of chop. After we motored out of the Doral Marina and into the open bay, we started testing. We got a nice performance out of the hole with a time of only 3.6 seconds to plane. When we tested her 0-30 miles per hour performance we found she reached 30 mph in only 8.4 seconds.

The 200 SunQuest cruises most economically at about 28.6mph turning 2500 rpms. At this speed she burns 5.1 gallons per hour and has a range of 156 miles. When she reaches full throttle she is burning 15.1 gallons per hour and traveling 51.1 mph at 4800rpms. Sound levels ranged from 70 dBa at idle to 98 dBa at full throttle.

Doral’s 200 SunQuest gasoline sterndrive model is a rich looking, sporty driving hot rod on the water. If you want to have a sturdy, elegant looking boat that will give you years of thrilling performance Doral has a great boat to show you.
