The Mission of the Rinker 216 BR
Twenty-one feet is a popular size for a sportboat and this one is designed for both the first time buyer and also for people moving up from something in the teens. The concept is to make her affordable yet still able to perform all of the basic watersports activities sport boats must provide. By offering one of the largest selection of engine options we have ever seen in class, buyers should be able to dial-in exactly the horsepower needed for their application and passenger load.
The basic 216 BR has virtually everything needed as standard for normal operation which is cruising and light towing activities. Like many boats in class the 216 has a sun pad aft, a bench seat with storage lockers under, two bucket seats with bolster, a walk-through windshield with closing doors, and a bow seating area with storage and an anchor locker forward. By carrying her 8’6” beam forward of the windshield, the Captiva’s bow seating area has a bit more room than it would have had otherwise. The forward-facing seat backs are angled for comfort when seated forward with legs on the cushion. An optional fill-in cushions conveniently stows in under-seat compartments. The bow has an anchor locker forward of the seating area.The windshield’s center access panel pivots on a full-length C-channel rather than on a piano hinge.
At the Helm
The 216’s helm envelops the operator behind a deeply raked, wrap-around windshield. A compartment below for feet and legs is contoured and adequate size. The throttle control position appears high for the seat height, until the flip-up bolster is deployed to elevate the driver -- then the virtue of the throttle/gear placement is discovered. When standing it is high enough to reach it. The instrument panel is about as clean and simple as they come. There are storage compartments built into the fully rolled and bolstered interior bulkheads on the starboard and port sides of the cockpit. The ergonomically shaped wheel, standard, allows the operator to know his hand position without having to take his eyes off the water while underway. We like the design.
The Captiva’s cockpit features standard sectional, snap-in carpeting, matching helm and passenger seats with flip-up bolsters and three large stainless-steel grab handles. To port in front of the companion seat is a glove box in the console.The depth of the cockpit averages 34'', which is good. Part of what makes this cockpit so safe is the fact that the windshield comes all the way back to just forward of the bench seat.
At the Stern
Behind the helm space is maximized in the cockpit where a full-width bench seat is installed instead of wrap-around seating. The aft end of the Captiva offers several amenities for watersports enthusiasts. There is a convertible sunpad leading to a swim platform large enough to house a telescopic stainless steel boarding ladder under a hatch with a handy, integrated hand hold.
Below the Pad.
The starboard side of the pad lifts up to reveal a hatch leading to a large storage locker that extends forward beneath the bench seat. The port-side sunpad flips up to reveal a portable trash receptacle secured inside a smaller storage compartment. The entire pad support panel is hinged aft and lifts –with the help of gas-assisted supports-- to offer easy access to the engine compartment from the Captiva’s cockpit.
The is also storage under the bench seat and on the centerline is a place for a pull-out cooler. There is LED courtesy lighting which guests should appreciate at night. The vinyl is treated to resist stains, mildew and mold, according to the builder.
Every boat should have sun shade and Rinker offers a color coordinated acrylic Bimini top with boat. ($762). Full canvas with side curtains is available for $1,064. A bow and stern cockpit cover is optional at $913.●Trim tabs are optional with LED indicators for $1,050. ●Other items of equipment that we'd consider is an automatic fire extinguisher for the engine room, ($715), a ski/wakeboard tower ($3,235), and an extended swim platform. ($1,549).
Performance and Handling
Powered by the standard 4.3 liter MerCruiser spinning a five-blade stainless steel prop, the test model 216 BR topped the 47 mph mark turning 4800 rpm at wide open throttle. This is a good WOT speed given the five-bladed prop and the relatively low rpms, and we suspect that the boat's pad plays an important role in this performance. A lot of thought has gone into the Rinker 216 in order to give her both towing power and an impressive high speed.
for the Rinker 216 Captiva is 27.9 mph (44.9 kph), and the boat gets 3.47 miles per gallon (mpg) or 1.48 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 131 miles (210.82 kilometers).She got on plan in 5.5 seconds and was responsive in the turns. The boat can turn practically within her length with the helm cranked fully to port or starboard. Stability at the dock or at idle speed was good for a boat with a 19-degree deadrise at the transom, which we credit to the true reverse chine of the hull and the forward extending beam.
Engines and Pricing
A total of 37 engines models are available from both Volvo Penta and Mercury to power the Rinker 216 BR.For those folks living outside the U.S., Rinker offers a Mercury sterndrive 190-hp 4.3 L TKS with Alpha drive -- without catalyst -- for a total of $33,662. A Volvo Penta 200-hp V6-200 engine is $34,795. Americans can have the 220-hp Mercury 4.3 L MPI catalyzed version for $36,789, or the Volvo Penta 225-hp 5.7 L V8-225 C-SX engine for $37,850. At the top of the engine option list id the 320-hp Volvo Penta V8-320 DP EVC with DuoProp and drive by wire controls with EVC For $44,762. Mercury's 320-hp 6.2 L 377 MAG MPI B3 DTS is offered at $45,034.
