Comfortable U-shaped seating in the cockpit will seat up to 7 people. A table mounts on a pedestal for lunches or hors d’oeuvres, and that table naturally lowers to form a sunpad. There is no storage under the seats, as this is a tradeoff for having the after seats being able to slide fore and aft. I found this feature a little difficult to perform, having to remove a seat insert and backrest cushion to do so. It left me having to store the two sections I removed and I saw little benefit to compressing the seats. Others, though, may love having a more intimate gathering area while adding to the swim platform space. An extremely comfortable lumbar support runs all the way around the seats. For sun protection, there is a hard top with a Bimini aft that easily closes to allow the sunpad occupants to roast in comfort. Over to port is a sink with a removable cooler just below. I’ve always been a fan of having a cooler rather than a dual voltage refrigerator. You just can’t carry the fridge into your kitchen and load it up. Abaft the sink is a wastebasket that is recessed into the side bulkhead. Overhead, the radar arch is hinged to collapse and give you just a bit more bridge clearance.
The helm seat is double wide allowing for a second set of eyes looking forward. Both the captain's and observer’s sections are fitted with a flip up bolster. This area also makes for a nice conversational spot when combined with the occupants of the lounger off to port. Doral did things a little differently with the Venezia helm. It’s a three tiered helm with the upper level housing the gauges mounted in a burl wood panel. Waterproof rocker switches are low and to the left. Non-wood panels are brushed aluminum which keeps things bright but non-glaring. A compass is mounted in the center line, right in the captain’s line of sight. The steering wheel is a very classy looking wood rimmed three-spoked version. Interestingly, the depth gauge is mounted off to the left, outside the panel and right above the drink holder. Interesting because there’s plenty of room on the panel itself for mounting space.
Something you don’t see very often is the powder-coated windshield frame with beefy support struts. The struts are convenient for using the frames as supports when utilizing the walk-through windshield.
There’s a lot of natural light entering the Venezia cabin, and that sometimes translates to heat. You can counter this by either opening hatches, or turning on the optional air conditioner. If you don’t have the generator option, you’ll need to plug in the shore power cord into the outlet located portside amidships. Doral uses tinted acrylic doors on their boats. This allows you to see up on deck from the cabin, but it also allows for people on the dock to see into the cabin at night. At anchor it’s a nice feature. A curved screen slider goes a long way towards keeping the cabin ventilated on a cool night. The cabin’s main feature is the curved settee forward that converts as expected to a forward berth. Rather than the typical V forward, this curving settee is much more comfortable and keeps everyone facing one another regardless of where you are in the cabin, where a V only has you facing whoever may be opposite you. The table has a feature that is sure to be copied elsewhere. It has a unique mounting base that allows it to pivot as well as slide side to side. This makes getting out from behind it infinitely more comfortable.
There are cabin windows that not only look great from the outside, but they allow gobs of natural light into the cabin from their 3'9” (2.06 m) length. In addition, there are four opening portlights and an overhead hatch. But all that falls by the wayside at night, so there are several wall mounted lights that swivel and rotate. These lights can be used for reading, direct or indirect light. A feature that Doral is famous for is headroom, and in this cabin we’re looking at 6’1” (1.85 m), and there’s a beautiful glossed finished wood trim piece going down the center of the overhead. The galley features the usual cast of features: Single burner electric stove, that I’d like to see sea rails placed around, a microwave, single basin sink, and dual voltage refrigerator/freezer. The electrical control panel is just above the stove. Counters on our test boat were dark Corian. Opposite is a wet head with storage, mirror, portlight, and a curtain that pulls across the doorway. Abaft all this is another berth tucked under the cockpit deck.
Handling and Performance
The Venezia hull has dual lifting strakes to either side that help achieve nice speeds, even with a single engine, as well as grab water in the turns. Reverse chines give a stable ride. When we pulled the power off from cruise, we noticed none of the stern wave following up and over the swim platform, or worse, into the cockpit. When doing slow turns, the boat pivoted just ahead of the windshield, which is good to know when maneuvering around the dock. Trimming the 275 Venezia is pretty straightforward. Get up on plane and start adding up-trim to the outdrive. It won’t take too much. You won’t notice a change in the spray coming out from the sides about where the helm is, but you will start to notice a boost in speed accompanied by the engine getting a bit quieter. Then you’re in that sweet spot where you want to be. If you go a little too high, the bow will start porposing up and down, and if you experience that, then just drop the trim back down a pulse or two and you're back in the sweet spot. Given that this is a sterndrive boat, you’ll notice that there’s a gentle roll into the turns that I found to be very comfortable. Once the boat rolls in, she then digs into the turn, but because you’re already leaning over, that grab has more of an effect of settling you into your seat as opposed to throwing you out of it. Steering is all fingertip gentle thanks to the power steering. Sightlines, whether sitting on the bolster or standing, are excellent. Bow rise on hole shot is around 16-degrees so you will lose visibility if sitting, so don’t be shy about hitting the throttle to get up on step. Cranking the wheel hard over and flooring the throttle showed no ventilation from the propeller; the engine loaded up at around 3500 RPM. We were turning around in less than a boat length with no adverse effects. This is a boat that can take it quite well.Overall I was very impressed with the fit and finish of the Doral 275 Venezia. It makes an ideal couple’s boat as you can keep the forward table in place for dining. However, with a few simple adjustments, a family of three or four, or perhaps two couples can have a comfortable weekend onboard at a distant port.
