Formula 310 Bowrider (2007-2010) Captain's Report

Fast, Roomy and Versatile Big Bowrider

By Capt. Rob Smith

Every year Formula strives to bring to market an answer to the customer’s demands. Every year the builders continues to amaze a person like myself with a boat that is powerful, imaginative and eye-pleasing—like this year’s new 310 Bow Rider. Whether you enjoy blasting across the water at 50 mph or a quiet conversation sitting in the comfy cockpit with drink in hand, we think you will appreciate and approve of this new model. It is truly an all-out dayboat. Formula built this model based on the cockpit design of the popular 310SS. The sound system is pleasing to the ear with separate tweeters and a 200-watt amplifier with sub woofer, so Vivaldi or Kiss will still come through like they were in concert. The list of standards and options on this model is equally impressive.

At the Bow

Here’s a cool option: stainless steel docking lights that make evening approaches much easier. Another great option that makes boating easier is the anchor windlass and chain counter. We were impressed with the forward seating. This modular seating is sculpted to be comfortable whether you stretch out with your feet up, or remove the connector and flip down the armrest and ride sitting up with the wind in your hair. At anchor, you can add filler cushions, including a backrest at the walkthrough for the windshield. Yes we said windshield. Everyone can enjoy the same pleasant sound because there are separate speakers and tweeters on each side of the bow. Twin stainless cup holders on each side are tucked into the break between the seat and backs and are complete with matching Corian accents. The seat bases form large storage compartments and the seats pivot up and out of the way on hinges.

At the Helm

The command helm station is large and creates room inside to store the filler cushions, table and mounting space for the stereo amplifier as well as a CD stacker and breaker panel. Even an iPod cradle was tucked in our test model. The forward door flips around and locks into place to form an effective air dam to protect the riders from the wind. Another unique feature in the walkthrough area is the locking mechanism for the flip-over windshield. Usually you have two knobs you must twist into place; the lower one just gets forgotten about, creating an annoying rattle because of a loose fit. Instead, the Formula has a connecting rod between the upper and lower knob so that turning one turns both. Great idea.

Hit the Head

The head is surprisingly large—about the size we’d expect to find on a big deckboat. The door swings well out of the way so you don’t have to fold up like a pretzel to get in. Once inside, you have a Vacuflush head unit, molded vanity with stainless steel sink and Corian countertop. The flooring is beautiful American Cherry woodgrain finish and you even have a sliding window for fresh air.

The command helm center has all the latest equipment with room to add your own favorite toys. Burlwood and brushed aluminum accents add an executive flavor and illuminated Lavorsi instrumentation keeps you abreast of the engine function. Dino tilt steering, digital depth sounder, Kenwood Commander Remote, iPod/MP3 port, Bennett trim tabs (with indicators!) and Lavorsi throttle and shifts are also standard. Our test model had the Mercury DTS with Mercury SmartCraft instruments option added. You can keep your favorite navigator right next to you with the split bench helm seat with armrests and bolsters. Over on the port side is a lounger with dive tank storage.

Entertainment Central

A wet bar stretches across the aft port side, with Corian top, concealed trash bin access, sink and storage below. Inside the aft compartment are the battery switches and main circuit breaker—and in the forward locker is a 36-quart Igloo cooler.

The U-shaped seating expands to fill the aft cockpit, but there’s still room to exit out to the swim platform on the port side. For snacks, a table sets up quickly and has 4 stainless steel drink holders built in. The table top and legs have dedicated storage in the base of the starboard portion of the lounge. Beneath your feet is a large sole locker for storage or to house a generator. The aft-facing sun lounger converts into a full-length sunpad. Lifting the engine hatch gave us access to the twin 6.2-liter MPI MerCruisers with SeaCore corrosion-protection technology. They fit neatly in the space with enough room to do normal engine checks and maintenance.

Stepping through the port walk-through there was another Kenwood Commander Remote to control the tunes from the water. A swim shower is also mounted here. Over in the starboard corner was a concealed four-step swim ladder along with a fender/line locker. If you have a thrill seeker aboard, add the stainless arch with wakeboard racks.

Specs and Performance

The all-new 310BR measures 31’ stem to stern with a beam of 9’6”. She tips the scale at 9,875 lbs. dry and carries 130 gallons of fuel and 30 gallons of fresh water. Bridge clearance with the optional arch is 8’8” and draft clearance is 37”.

Handling on this beauty was sweet. She takes turns on a dime and never loses control. Maneuvering around the challenging docks seemed simple. She reached a top speed of 49.5 mph and a cruise speed of 33.1 mph.

Without a doubt, the 310BR does the job as a fun-to-drive, speedy dayboat with lots of room to lounge and relax. Thoughtfully designed, this bowrider is definitely worth a look.
