Glacier Bay 2240 Renegade Captain's Report

Built Tough to Go Offshore

By Capt. Rob Smith

The Glacier Bay 2240 Renegade does a great job of combining family boating with fishing fun. The entire layout easily offers features for enjoying a day on the water fishing at your favorite hole, or just cruising for the afternoon. Glacier Bay designs their power catamarans to reduce impact loads and roll so the family will enjoy the ride for years to come.

The bow of the Renegade uses the catamaran width to give you lots of room to relax. Topside is an anchor roller and line locker for when you want to just hang out with room to stuff the fenders inside. Stepping on into the bow area, you have a comfortable space to sit and enjoy chatting with family and friends. If you have someone who enjoys laying out in the sun, you can add an optional filler cushion. Deep storage is under the seats taking advantage of the catamaran design. Under the starboard side is some dedicated rod storage.

The cockpit is surrounded by a full-framed windshield with a wide walkthrough. The walkthrough has a lower barrier dagger board you can put in place to block the chilly air. It is a two piece affair that is a bit clunky to use, but serves its purpose well. A door in the side of the helm allows access to a large carry-on cooler. Our test model was outfitted well for a fishing expedition with VHF, Honda digital gauges and a large Z2210 mapping display unit. We also had a three spoke stainless wheel with speed knob for close-quarters maneuvering.

Across from the helm was a popular family feature, a locking changing room with Porta Pottie in the companion compartment. Most times, this compartment is just large enough for a small-sized adult to squeeze into, but with the catamaran design, this is a stand-up compartment, that offers enough room even for a large guy like myself. Moving back is a short step-down into the aft cockpit. This is something you want to pay attention to as it can become a toe catcher until you are used to it. I really appreciated the protection the optional canvas bimini provided.

Just aft the helm seat is a built-in baitwell. Gunwale mount rod holders allow you to troll out some lines. There is a raw water washdown for a quick clean up after boating the fish or to rinse off sandy feet after a shore excursion. Over on the port side, doors allow access to all the space under the port companion seating. A fresh water hand shower is in the corner. At the stern, the starboard side has battery access and a handy three box tackle organizer. Under your feet is a handy fishbox with pump out and a matching box over on the port side. On top of the stern is your bait working station with a knife and hook board. In the port stern wall is an access panel to the fuel water separator.

You have a short step-over in the center to go aft. The battery switches and main breaker are behind a door in the step-over. For the family, you probably will want the optional swim platform and ladder. This one really makes a good dive ladder.

The Glacier Bay Renegade 2240 SX proved to be a smooth riding power catamaran that was also well suited for the economic twin 90-hp Honda outboards on the back. She handled the rough chop without any problems as expected. I found she was on plane in a quick 2.1 seconds and up to 30mph in 10.6 seconds. The 2240 was comfortably cruising at about 14.7mph for a range of 203 miles on a full tank. She reached a top speed of 34.8mph with three people on board.

This model is 22 feet length overall with a beam width of 8 feet 5 inches. She weighs in at 3,200 lbs. dry without engines and only draws 15 inches with the engines trimmed out of the water. This model is designed to carry a maximum of 126 gallons of fuel and six gallons of fresh water. She is rated for a maximum of 115hp twins on her stern.

The Renegade 2240 makes a wonderful cross-over for the family that loves to fish but still wants to have room to just enjoy a day of cruising.
