    Captain's Report

By Capt. Rob SmithThe ProKat 2660 is a compact power catamaran packed with the type of features that every serious angler must have. This is a true planing hull design, which means it rides high on top of the water delivering a more efficient and smoother ride. This design uses space efficiently, and provides greater ease of movement while fishing. The catamaran design means you will be more comfortable going out while many mono-hulls will want to wait it out at the docks.Bow FeaturesThe 2660 offers a wide bow, like all power catamarans, and has a low profile wraparound rail so you have plenty handholds anywhere you may be up front. The wide casting deck on the bow has an anchor roller and deep anchor line locker to the starboard side. Stepping down, the bench seat conceals a large storage box. Optional cushions quickly convert this into a great family boat for an afternoon outing. Rod lockers in the floor on either side mean your gear is safe and neat until you’re ready. Rod racks inside organize and protect your gear. If you want, you can add locking rod racks under the gunwales. A simple bar and brass lock will keep the gear out and ready, and will help prevent theft.Helm and Cockpit LayoutWalkways beside the helm are ample, so you’ll be able to work a fish from the stern to the bow without getting pinched as you go by the helm. Our model had a great bench seat in the front of the helm with cushions that hold you in place and drink holders to keep your beverage at hand. I liked the frameless windshield as it maximizes the view when you add the T-top. The helm dash is set up so you can outfit it with your choice of electronics. Room for flat screen electronics and digital gauges like the Honda digital gauges are easily installed. The wire races inside the helm have pull lines in them to make it a simple task to pull wire from the batteries and buss-bars to the new gear. For portable gear there’s a 12-volt socket right at the helm. The leaning post on our model had a nicely shaped seat cushion, and bolster/leaning pads for stand-up driving. On either side of the seat box are three tackle organizers, and on the starboard side is a washdown hose. The optional hard T-top on our model added five rocket launcher style rod holders, and spreader lights on the back edge. Sailfish outriggers were also added to the T-top for maximum trolling ability. Beneath the top is a cool florescent light which will come in handy at night. The cockpit has a freshwater rinsing sink and 40-gallon baitwell just aft the helm. Across the stern on our test model were seats with drop-away seat bottoms and hip-leaning post seat backs. Combing pads surrounded the cockpit and rod racks are just below the gunwales. A good toe rail is under the rod racks. Fish boxes are in the sole on either side of the aft cockpit. A dagger-board style center walkthrough gives you access to the stern to check out the engines, or to use the standard dive ladder. The optional fuel/water separator is mounted in the engine splash well.Test and SpecificationsI tested this model in Miami, Florida with light winds and minimal chop. The 2660 handled as well as predicted, and provided a dry ride. She got up on plane practically as fast as a bass rig with a 2.8 second hole shot. The 2660 reached 30 mph in 4.6 seconds and best cruise speed was achieved around at 23.8 mph. The ProKat 2660 measures 27 feet length overall with a beam of 9 feet 2 inches. This model weighs about 4450 pounds dry and is rated for up to 500 horsepower outboards. Fuel capacity is 252 gallons and her draft is about 13 inches with the engines trimmed out of the water. The ProKat 2660 is truly a compact power catamaran loaded with the type of performance you need to feel comfortable heading offshore. Be sure and check out the 2660 for your next fishing rig.
