Versatile and Comfortable
By Capt. Bob Smith
JC Pontoon considers the SunToon 21TT pontoon its answer to the SUV in their industry. This versatile boat delivers a smooth ride with plenty of room for the entire family. Even with a 90-hp four-stroke for power, it has the strength needed for a great ride.
Construction
JC uses high-grade marine stainless steel for most of the fittings on its boats, including the docking lights on the front. The corners have reinforcing guards on them to protect from the eventual contact with the dock or trailer. I really liked the large stainless steel cleats they use which have a center eye large enough to put a real dock line through them. The bow entry gate is wide enough to get your dock carts through them without a problem.
More Bow Features
Bow end caps are currently made of fiberglass, but JC is moving towards building them with composites that are friendlier towards the environment. These end caps have a stainless steel drinkholder built in and an access door so you can store items inside. Bow loungers have roto-molded seat bases that are vinyl covered to match the upholstery.
The seat bases will last a lifetime and provide excellent room for storage. Modular end caps allow you to choose designs that fit your particular needs aboard. This one had a flip-back lounger with two stainless steel drinkholders in the top and a storage compartment below. The other lounger had a modular end with fixed back, two stainless steel drinkholders in the top and a carry-on 36-quart Igloo cooler nested in the side.
At the Controls
The helm features a flip-top giving you unlimited access to all the wiring and cable runs to the dash. The dash has wood accents and a matching three-spoke wheel. Lighted rocker switches are grouped at your fingertips and have push-button circuit breaker protection. A Hummingbird Matrix 727 fish locator is in the center and is standard. Beede analog gauges are arranged over the top of the dash for great visibility. Behind the helm seat is a stainless steel rack for two fenders so your bumpers are readily available when you need them.
Aft Seating
The aft seating space is a typical L-shape. These seats also have roto-molded seat bases with hinged seat cushions and large storage capacity. The cranking battery is tucked in the aft seat base. A snack table can be set up in the corner and has an adjustable height table top with two drinkholders and a sea rail. Two more drinkholders are in the corner of the bench top.
Overhead is an in-house custom designed bimini with thick walled polished aluminum tubes and Sunbrella canvas. A small sun pad is across the back and surrounded by a protective stainless rail.
The SunToon 21TT has a telescoping stern light that is easy to install and the compact design also makes it easy to store. The flip-out style swim ladder is just aft the stern gate on the starboard side of the boat.
Specifications
The SunToon 21 TT measures 21 feet in overall length with a deck width of 8’6”. She has three U-shaped tubes for excellent ride and lift. She weighs 2000 lbs, can carry as much as 3200 lbs of people and gear, and is rated for up to 150-hp outboards. This model has a 55 gallon fuel cell in her center tube.
Performance and HandlingI tested on Lake Wawasee in Indiana on a calm summer morning. The 21TT handled very well with the Honda 90 four-stroke and proved to be very nimble and responsive. I found she was at cruise at 14.9 mph and up to top speed at 27.9 mph. At cruise, she is able to deliver 320 miles on a full tank.
The SunToon 21 TT proved to be truly a versatile boat that can be comfortable for a family and durable enough to last many, many years.
