Captain's Report

Smoker Craft 192 Ultima

By Capt. Bob Smith

Smoker Craft’s 192 bring a big brother to the very popular Millentia line and adds more room and versatility for the larger family. This model has the same five-keel design which delivers excellent tracking and handling. The Hydra-Lift design gets you on plane quicker and is racing across the water without getting smacked by overspray from the bow.

At the Bow

The Ultima’s bow area offers a spacious platform for both family fun and fishing. It is pre-wired for a Minn Kota 70 Power Drive and is equipped with a main engine trim switch right where the trolling motor connects. The ground tackle stores easily in a vinyl-lined locker and the bow light is secured on the bottom of the lid so you don’t have to fumble around to find it.

You can store life jackets and other gear in the large forward dry box on the starboard side. Over to port is a large lighted livewell and in ski mode there are cushions up front for riders to relax on. Drinkholders for your cold beverages are in each corner near the full-framed wraparound windshield. In fish mode, the Ultima has a unique lift and flip filler that pops into place to create a large casting deck. An aluminum post easily adds a casting station if you prefer to sit. Long grab rails give the front riders a great hand-hold and pop-up cleats keep the gunwale tops neat and snag-free when fishing.

The Controls

The helm on the Ultima is raised, like many of their line. This really brings the windshield up for better protection from the elements and also brings the instruments up into clearer view behind the wheel. An eyebrow over the key gauges makes them even easier to read in bright sunshine. Another benefit to this design is the added legroom. At six feet, I often find I am wedged into a helm seat on smaller boats, but not on the Ultima. Additional equipment like a charting fishfinder or GPS can fit easily to the right of the instrument panel. One of the trolling motor batteries is in a tray under the helm..

Over on the companion side, you also benefit with improved legroom with a raised dash. The glove box has a flip lid cover on top for storing some of your favorite lures in a Plano style box. The glove box itself is large enough to keep all you valuables and papers dry.

At the Stern

In the cockpit, there is an abundant amount of room for fish and play and the seat bases offer multiple layouts. The seat bases are powder-coated on the tops and bottoms to offer many years of corrosion-free service. The decks of the Ultima are vinyl-coated for worry-free clean up and the snap-in carpet protect feet on hot days. Across the stern, there are two more seats with storage below them. When you want to just fish, these seats flip over to form a large stern casting deck. And even with a casting chair set up, the large lighted livewell is easy to use and access. Two more tackle boxes tuck under the lip of the stern casting deck in the center.

Specifications

The Ultima 192 measures 18’10” length overall and has a stable 96” beam. She has 27” of interior depth and weighs about 1,575lbs dry without the engine package. She carries up to 8 people or a total of 1,750lbs (people and gear). Fuel capacity on this model is 40 gallons.

Performance

I had great test conditions and found the 192 Ultima was on plane in only 3.6 seconds and passing 30 mph in 6.1 seconds. Rigged with a Honda 150-hp four stroke outboard she cruised at 3000 rpm doing 20.5 mph and topped out turning 6000 rpm at 47.6 mph

For fishing and family fun the Ultima delivers room, storage, durability, and a smooth ride.
