Practice Throwing a Type IV... - 07/25/2007

Figure out which is the most effective way to toss the cushion, ring, or horseshoe. For this woman, a side-arm chuck was most accurate.

Aim for something. For this drill, a target (a white fender) was placed about 30 feet away.

Every recreational boat must have a Type IV throwable device on board. But it’ll do you no good if you or one of your crew fail to throw it accurately to the victim in the water. Type IV or throwable devices are ring buoys and floating cushions. Practice throwing them at targets in the water. It’s not as easy as you’d think. Attach 50 feet of line to the device so you can retrieve it. !!
