Yamaha SuperJet (2012-2013) Captain's Report

Yamaha SuperJet 2010

Year after year since it was introduced, the Yamaha SuperJet is the darling of the custom shops and the aftermarket guys. It’s not that this craft is inadequate; quite the contrary. But, with all due respect to the manufacturer, there doesn’t seem to be many active SuperJets out there that have not been “souped-up.” But Yamaha is not unaware of what’s been going on. They know that their customers seem to want to make a great boat even better. And the SJ’s popularity is high no matter what kind of stand-up riding the owner participates in, be it speed runs, slalom or freestyle. The Yamaha SuperJet has a new improved hull design promising to make this craft the best all-around stand-up PWC in the industry. This year, the designers at Yamaha have decided not to let the speedshop guys have all the fun!

The Reliable Yamaha Marine Engine

The powerplant in the SuperJet is a member of Yamaha’s reliable marine engine family. The 2 cylinder, two-stroke, 701 CC Yamaha engine features electronically controlled variable ignition timing and loop-charged combustion for quick throttle response throughout the range. Yamaha’s Corrosion Protection System and Stainless Steel Impeller Housing Liner contribute to this motor’s durability. The SuperJet 144mm Hyper–Flow jet pump propulsion system provides excellent hook-up and smooth acceleration. And this pump is manufactured with YDC30, a combination of zinc and copper alloys which offers excellent corrosion protection. In addition, the intake duct and grate have been optimized to direct flow into the pump. To keep water out of the hull, an automatic bilge system is fitted. And every custom PWC or race shop will be happy to show you the endless list of accessories available for you to customize the performance of your SuperJet.

The Hull

Yamaha SuperJet

The hull is where the real changes were made in the SuperJet. The changes make this boat more balanced for hard cornering and wide-open speed. They’ve increased the wetted surface of the hull by adding molded-in sponsons which are integrated into the hull lines. These allow the craft to turn easier while making the SJ more stable for novice and intermediate riders. They’ve deepened the chines and narrowed the stern a little, so the SuperJet rider can lean over further while still maintaining hook-up. In addition, an extended rideplate works along with the rest of the changes and improvements to provide enhanced stability. Taken together, all these modifications result in the aggressive rider being able to maintain speed and lean over while holding a turn more effectively than in the past. For the novice, the design changes offer the advantage of more stability in the ride.

On Deck

Yamaha SuperJet

Up on top you’ll find plenty of thick padding in the riding tray for a more comfortable ride, and there’s a kick step to provide added balance and slip resistance. The oval-shaped handle pole is both light and strong and has a high pivot. It makes turning and transitions easier by giving the rider more leverage. The handle pole is fitted with a corrosion resistant coil spring, so the pole feels even lighter, reducing fatigue. And steering is made even better by the adjustable steering nozzle.

Yamaha SuperJet 2010

Thoughtful of their surroundings, the folks at Yamaha have made an effort to reduce noise emissions by utilizing a transom exhaust system. Its part of Yamaha’s Sound Supression System, targeted to reduce intake noise, exhaust noise and vibration noise. To insure safety, the SuperJet, like Yamaha’s entire WaveRunner line-up, uses the trademarked Visibility Spout waterspout from the rear of the craft.

The Specs

The Yamaha SuperJet is 88.2” long, 26.8” wide, 26” high, and weighs 291 pounds dry. It has a fuel capacity of 4.8 gallons with a reserve of just under a gallon and a half. The SJ has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $8,199. The color and graphics package for the latest model year is Black.
