Yamaha FX Cruiser High Output (2004) Captain's Report

Tested By Capt. Ron Svoboda

Yamaha WaveRunners are synonymous with fun, and for 2004, the FX Cruiser High Output adds comfort to all the excitement. The high-end personal watercraft market is super competitive. Before, it was all about who could make the fastest boat. Well it still is, but comfort has become the latest marketing angle. And for good reason, for if you have ever spent an entire day on one of these rocket ships, you know what I mean.

Comfortable Seating

Let’s talk about creature comforts. First up is the innovative rear seat that adds support for the back passenger as well as a pair of hand holds. The mid and pilots seats are also plush, thanks to generous padding and supple vinyl. Up front, a tilt steering column works wonders for pilots of all sizes, and is operated by a conveniently located lever.

Features

Storage space abounds on the FX Cruiser High Output. The largest compartment is forward in the bow and concealed by a hatch that is raised by a pair of gas assisted struts. In order to access the compartment, you start by pulling a dash-mounted lever. Smaller items can go into the glove box which features a pair of self-draining beverage holders. Located under the rear seat is another large storage compartment, and includes a small, insulated cooler.

Up at the bars is Yamaha’s information system which illustrates engine data, plus provides audible warnings and self-diagnostics functions. This amazing on board computer also has a remote control fob that can access the security and low-rpm modes from up to 30 feet away. The low-rpm mode is another great feature that allows less skilled riders to enjoy this high tech water toy, but limits the maximum speed by allowing the engine to rev only to a certain rpm.

The FX Cruiser is 131 and a-half inches long with a 48.4 inch width. She tilts the scales at 772 pound dry and provides 18.5 gallons of fuel capacity. The 1052 cc engine is fed by electronic fuel injection to produce 160 horsepower to the three-blade stainless steel impeller.

Handling and Performance

On a cool day in South Florida, we tested the High Output Yamaha as she screamed to a top speed of 58 miles per hour. Lighter pilots will do better of course, but you can depend on loading this boat up with family or friends and have great fun while being environmentally conscious. Most notably about the performance of the FX is how stable and confident the ride is at top speed. Some other watercraft may be faster overall, but they don’t deliver the secure feeling that this boat offers when you’re pushing 60 miles per hour. With a clean burning four-stroke engine and room for three, the FX Cruiser High Output is a stable performance craft that can aptly feed that all-important need for speed.
