Yamaha VX Deluxe (2007-) Captain's Report
A stable, relaxing ride with extra power to carry gear or pull a skier- Yamaha's VX Deluxe
By Capt. John Wenz
Named “Watercraft of the Year” by Watercraft World magazine for 2005, the VX Deluxe WaveRunner from Yamaha has been a huge success. Following in its wake, the 2006 model does not disappoint. It’s easy to see why this boat is so hot- it’s a great value. The VX Deluxe is a full-featured PWC with a four-stroke engine that sells for under $8,000.
Recognizing that 99 percent of all personal watercraft sold today are multi-person models, Yamaha has been aggressive in their marketing approach toward that segment. These buyers are families, many of whom are budget-conscious. This WaveRunner has hit the mark- and it scores a bull’s-eye. All the features and value that made the ’05 model such a success are still there. Bold new color and graphics for 2006 are the basic changes. But why fix what’s not broke!
Power Plant
The 110 horse power Yamaha MR-1 is clean and quiet. It was designed exclusively for marine use. Yamaha’s computerized engine management system controls and adjusts fuel and ignition parameters and provides for off throttle steering, and a slant detection switch shuts the motor down immediately in the event of overturning to prevent water ingestion. A high volume intake box with water repellent air filter, dry sump lubrication, and a corrosion protection system provide the dependability you want for extended cruising and long engine life. This 1052cc, 4 cylinder, 20 valve motor delivers enough acceleration to thrill, and still develops enough power to pull adult wakeboarders and skiers.
Deck Layout
The “rider forward” design allows for a longer seat. A length of 127.7” provides an extended rear deck for stability when boarding. The foot chocks and non-slip deck areas make you feel secure whether you’re riding or moving around on deck. Up forward, you’ll find plenty of storage under the hood. Along with the glove box, the VX Deluxe has a total of 19 gallons of storage.
Instrumentation and Electronics
The “Multi Function Electronic Center” provides a quick read on speed, rpm, fuel level, low fuel warning, low oil pressure warning, overheat warning, hour meter, and a self-diagnostic check engine feature. In addition, the remote control security system disables the ignition at the touch of a button. The same pocket transmitter activates Yamaha’s “Low RPM Mode” which decreases engine rpms by 30%, reducing top speed for those novices in your family who aren’t quite up to full speed.
Yamaha- An Industry Leader
Yamaha Watercraft Group was first to introduce the two-person watercraft in 1986, and first with a three-person model in 1990. In 2002 Yamaha introduced the first four-stroke powered PWC. A Yamaha WaveRunner has been named “Watercraft of the Year” seven times since 1993. The 2006 model year continues their role as industry innovation leaders.
Additional Features
Nineteen gallons of total storage including the bow compartment and, at the driver’s position, a glove box with self-draining beverage holders. Dual mirrors provide excellent visibility to the rear and they blend right in with the forward cowling. The finger throttle lever reduces hand fatigue on those extended runs. The conveniently placed lever for reverse gear allows the boat to be backed off a trailer or out of a tight spot. Yamaha’s trademarked “Visibility Spout”, from the rear of the craft, makes all Yamaha PWCs more visible for safety. The VX hull is light and strong, fabricated from Yamaha’s SMC materials which allow touched-up scratches to blend right in. The “Performance Sponson” design provides added straight-line comfort & performance. The manufacturer provides a one year limited warranty.
Specs
The VX Deluxe measures 127.7’’ in overall length, 46.4 “ wide, weighs 715 pounds dry, and holds up to three persons and 15.9 gallons of regular gas.
On The Water
Ideal test conditions were the order of the day for our run with the VX Deluxe. Light breeze, air temperature in the upper 70’s with the water a few degrees cooler. We reached a top speed of 53.6 miles per hour and I enjoyed every minute of it. Handling was positive; the boat responded well to throttle and steering. You get a whole lot of fun for the money!

All speeds are measured by a hand held Stalker PRO radar gun and a hand help digital timer, so the human elements is a factor. Temperature, saltwater versus fresh, load, and water conditions are all a factor and the reason why test results may vary.
