Sea Ray 270 Sundeck (2005-) Captain's Report
The new Sea Ray 270 Sundeck is a very surprising vessel combining unique and practical features with performance and style.
Sea Ray’s 270 Sundeck is the largest in the Sea Ray Sundeck product line. At 27 feet, it’s the ideal deck boat for the family with lots of friends. Whether cruising, towing wake boarders, or just sitting in a cove, the 270 Sundeck entertains like a gracious host. Great looks and styling are only the beginning with the 270 Sundeck. She’s got a solid deep-V design, a 21-degree deadrise, and plenty of power to push her through even the worst days keeping you comfortable and dry.
The helm features high gloss burl panels, large easy to read gauges, sport tilt steering wheel, and a flip up thigh bolster. Power assisted steering power trim and tilt, and depth finder are all standard. There’s even room to mount a GPS or color fish finder. Unique to Sea Ray is a compact electronic keypad with lighted ISO symbols for easy operation of other 12 volt circuits. It is an ergonomic cluster of accessory switches that is very nicely crafted with soft touch appeal and a nice enhancement to the dash. There’s also a Clarion AM/FM/CD with amplifier, digital cockpit remote control, and six speakers
Neatly hidden in the bow is a telescoping boarding ladder. You rarely see this at the bow! What a great idea for disembarking at the beach! Beneath the hatch in the bow is an insulated cooler and there’s a fresh water wash down as well. The walk through windshield provides great protection from the elements and there are big dry storage areas for your all your gear under the comfortable lounge seats. Optional filler cushions in the bow convert the bow seating into a huge sun pad. Just aft of the port bow lounge is a lighted enclosed head with locking privacy door, storage, and freshwater sink.
Now the biggest surprise is on the starboard side just forward of the helm and just aft of the starboard side bow lounge. A privacy door opens to reveal a lighted, wide single berth! What a great use of space and a great spot to get out of the sun or take a nap! This compartment is also equipped with a carbon monoxide monitor for additional safety.
Engine access is easy by lifting the gas assisted engine hatch. There’s plenty of room here to perform routine maintenance and servicing.
Our test vessel was powered with a Mercruiser 496 MAG gasoline engine coupled to a Bravo III outdrive. Two output sizes are available, 375-hp and 425-hp in addition to the standard 320 HP 6.2L Merc. All that power with the performance exhaust option really adds some attitude to this boat. Additionally, the trim tabs and stainless steel prop are standard and appreciated items.
The cockpit has a lot of room to move about or just to sit and relax. There’s dedicated storage under the port sun lounge and there’s this huge storage compartment in the cockpit sole. To starboard you’ll find this wet bar with pullout sprayer, covered freshwater sink, storage, and built in carry on cooler. The walk through transom door gives you great access to the dive platform with integral boarding ladder.
The 270 Sundeck has a solid and stable ride due in part to her overall length of 26’6” , beam of 8’10”, and her dry weight of 5800 pounds.. The hull tracked well through the turns and accelerated very quickly. The steering is responsive and smooth due in part to the power assisted steering and the deep-V design of the hull. In fact the hull features a vented chine design for even greater performance.
Out on our test track we recorded a top speed of 50.7 mph turning 4750 RPM and recording a sound level of 96 decibels. Our best cruising speed was calculated at 30.0 mph turning 3000 rpm burning 10.7 gallons per hour. That means you can run 214 miles between fill ups in this boat! The 270 also clocked an impressive time to plane test of 4.2 seconds and a 0-30 run of 6.7 seconds.
The Sea Ray 270 Sundeck is by far the most complete deck boat we’ve seen to date with performance, styling, accommodations, and a high level of production quality. This is sure to become one of the most popular day boats in the Sea Ray line if not the entire day boat market.
