Regal 4060 Commodore (2007-) Captain's Report
A Luxury Cruiser with Live-Aboard Accommodations
By Capt. Bob Smith
Regal continues to build on excellence listening to its customers and going back to the design table year after year. This year’s update to the 4060 is following in the wake of success in the Commodore line and delivering a great yacht for weekends and cruising performance. We tested this model in St. Petersburg, FL in some rough conditions and came away impressed with the handling, performance and amenities abound this luxurious yacht.
At the Bow
Up front, the 4060 Commodore uses three hatches which cover large storage boxes for storing fenders, lines, and ground tackle equipment. A stainless steel anchor roller, guard, and scuff plate lead the anchor cleanly to and from the windlass system. Connections for wash down are conveniently under the covers. Foot and dash actuators make retrieving and setting the hook simple. A sun lounger pad is centered in the bow and the back can be set for you to relax in lounger style or lay flat and soak up maximum sun. Also here are twin drinkholders on either side of the sun pad for beverages. Our test boat was equipped with the optional hardtop for maximum protection while in the cockpit. The wraparound windshield has a single wiper on the helm side and a center walkthrough for quick access to the bow and cockpit.
Cockpit and Engine Access
Entry to the cockpit is through a starboard side walkthrough transom door. The engine hatch switch is also located at the door. The engine hatch raises high providing great access to the engine compartment. Talk about room to work! Adding the IPS to the Volvo D6 diesel package leaves plenty of room to access all of the critical check and service points in this room. Back topside, the aft cockpit features an L-shaped lounger. Both seats are hinged and beneath the cushions is a ton of storage space for life jackets and more. In the forward wall of this section is a dedicated spot for the carry-on cooler.
Control Stations
Regal made major changes at the helm station for the 2007 model. Wood panels and a burlwood wheel with stereo controls on the wheel are optional additions to the standard package on this boat. A Raymarine C80 Chartplotter, ST60 Digital Depth meter are standard as well as a Raymarine VHF radio. Because this boat was set up with the Volvo D6 package with IPS we had the Volvo keyless start, engine monitor, and electronic controls at the helm.
Across from the helm station is a C-shaped lounger with removable table. The table stores beneath one end of the lounger and also comes with a lower post and filler cushion to make a day bed for the little ones topside. A chartholder is on the top of the dash on this side. [This one is designed for one page at a time. I prefer the ones designed for Chart Kits better, but regardless, it is functional.]
Refreshment Center
The wet bar is conveniently placed behind the helm station where it is accessible from the forward and aft lounges. The refreshment center has a cutting board, refrigerator or optional ice maker, and tip out trash bin. I like the optional icemaker because I can never find enough ice on board for soda! The stereo is also mounted in the wall with remotes located at the stern and on the steering wheel.
Stern Features
Equipped with a telescoping swim ladder tucked under the port side, the large swim platform offers space for playing at anchor and an easy step-on from the docks. In the port end of the stern is a hatch where all the dock connections are fed. Our boat came with the optional Glendinning cord reel for the twin 30amp dock power connections which really makes shoving off quick and simple. This cord reel even comes with a cordless remote so you don’t have to reach into the box to hit the reel switches. The center stern trunk uses a scissor opening system that keeps you safely on the swim platform when reaching for lines and fenders stored inside.
Below Deck
Through the smoked glass companionway door and down flying wood tread steps, is a spacious and very well lit salon. The lounge is located on the starboard side of the boat complete with deep pile carpet. The built-in recliners are comfortable and make relaxing and enjoying the 20” flat screen TV/DVD system with surround sound a real joy. Beautiful cabinets are above the lounge for storage and located at the end of the couch is a cabinet with storage for wine bottles and glasses. Even a central vacuum system is standard on the 4060. The table stores away easily and the couch can convert into a berth for two.
For the Chef
Across from the salon is a compact galley with more beautiful cabinetry. The galley is complete with a microwave, coffeemaker, Corian countertop, two burner cooktop and polished stainless steel sink. Next to the galley is the TV, surround sound system and a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer.
Staterooms
The main stateroom features an island bed with two large drawers and an under the mattress storage tray. Lighted, cedar-lined closets are on either end and for entertainment, a 13” color flat screen TV with remote. The forward head has a Vacu-Flush toilet, vanity with Corian countertop, and shower with circular enclosure.
The mid-stateroom has a solid wood pocket door for privacy. Just inside the door on the port wall is a vanity with sink, mirror, and cabinet for storage. Just aft is a separate Vacu-Flush toilet and shower. This stateroom also has its own cedar-lined closet and air conditioning controls. With a filler cushion, the twin berths can convert to a single larger bed.
Specifics and Performance
Complete with the extended swim platform the 4060 Commodore measures 40’ 1” length overall. She carries a beam width of 13’ 0’’ and weighs 19,000 pounds with the standard engine package. She carries 277 gallons of fuel and has a fresh water capacity of 75 gallons. Inside, she has over six feet of headroom and sleeps up to six adults. Overall clearance measures 11’9” to the top of the arch for bridge clearance and 39” below for draft.
Testing in rough waters with a strong wind, we found the 4060 extremely maneuverable around the docks with the IPS system from Volvo. Turning underway was also noticeably improved over what is normally expected. Although in calm waters performance times could be better, she was on plane in just 11.3 seconds and passing 30mph in 15 seconds. With twin Volvo D6 diesel power plants and IPS system, her cruise speed was around 2500 rpm doing 20.7mph for a range of 283 miles on a full tank of fuel. Top speed was 38.2mph at 3550 rpm. Sound levels were great with a top reading on the decibel meter of only 85dBa.
The 4060 Commodore offers a lot of value for what you are buying and makes it a great yacht for the couple or family interested in cruising.
