Regal 4080 Commodore Captain's Report

Regal introduces another gem in it line up of Commodore vessels, the 4080. This new boat is an impressive sedan bridge model that is all cruiser and its amenities say so as well.

Looks alone separate this boat from others in its class. Regal designers did their homework on the 4080. Her lines and airy sedan bridge give her a look that is well…regal!

There is no place better to begin a tour of the 4080 than the bridge. The helm station has two swiveling captains chairs, tilt steering wheel, and all the gauges are on an easy line of sight above it. Speaking of visibility, Regal has managed to plan the helm so that the skipper has extraordinary vision fore and aft. Close quarters maneuvering will be made in confidence from this perch. And there’s extra space left over for a large sun pad. Every bridge should have one! There’s also plenty of seating with a good-sized L-shaped settee.

Step down to the cockpit via wide stairs molded along the port side where a stainless steel railing adds extra safety. The cockpit has one feature that gives away the 4080’s status as a true cruiser — rod holders on both port and starboard gunwales. That’s good because quite frankly, if you don’t fill this space with yacht furniture, a fighting chair will fit nicely.

Three doors on the cockpit sole open to reveal both engines or each may be used separately. The middle hatch opens over the top of both motors and can be propped open with a stainless steel rod for checking engine fluids. Both cockpit gunwales sport angle opening lockers, and the stern houses two. Gear or tackle can be kept handy, but hidden when not being used.

The acrylic doorway leads to a 3-foot wide swim platform reminiscent of a back porch. There are pull up cleats at the port and starboard corners for towing a tender or for lashing down some extra gear aboard. Two storage lockers have been incorporated here as well and they’re quite large and roomy. The starboard locker houses the shore power connectors with enough room remaining to accommodate a couple of sizeable fenders and dock lines. The port side compartment conceals a freshwater rinse shower with retractable hose.

The foredeck is accessible from the cockpit by steps on both sides of the boat creating a nifty walk-around deck. The crew members will appreciate the easy mobility when docking. And so will the helmsman.

Regal has installed twin Yanmar diesels sporting 440-hp each. Response is crisp and decisive from the time the gear selectors are engaged. A bow thruster is the extra crew member on this 40'1” craft. You’ll be thankful for it when docking under difficult circumstances. Located on the dash above the instruments, the bow thruster switch is simplified: power switch and color coded push buttons for port or starboard thrust.

Looking down below starts off with a yet quite usable sliding screened companionway integrated into the glass door. Crossing the threshold, step down into the salon using extra wide steps for sure footing regardless of seaway.

Two noteworthy aspects of the salon will embrace your sense of space. First, the interior goes to the hull and doesn’t stop at cabin sides or bulkheads. Secondly, the 9’6” headroom is not usually seen on a boat of this stature. A 20” TV and VCR comprise the entertainment center situated in the starboard aft corner.

The U-shaped dinette lowers to a double berth and is convenient to the galley for service. Corian counters and solid bottomed wood drawers are nice touch. An electric stove with custom sliding cover rounds out the galley package. Along with a sizable dual refrigerator and small freezer to its side. The roomy head has entry from both the galley as well as the stateroom. It’s well appointed with a Corian vanity, mirrored cabinetry, swiveling Plexiglass shower door, and electric head.

Forward you will find the master stateroom. Featured here is queen-sized island berth with a real spring mattress. Lift the foot of the mattress and note the deep storage locker. Two hanging lockers and an additional 9” TV/VCR combo make for cozy quarters.

Adjacent to the head is a reasonable quarter berth — also the result of utilizing the hull’s width for interior uses. The cabin has its own door and twin berths easily converted to yet another queen size sleeper. A skylight offers natural lighting exposing a hanging locker and drawer space. It’s truly amazing what Regal did with the Commodore’s 13-foot beam.

With 19,300 pounds of displacement, the Commodore 4080 holds 252 gallons of fuel. Put the Yanmars in gear and ease up to 1000rpms. You’ll be making good way @7.8 mph, consuming a paltry 2.7 gph. True to diesel form, you’ll turn a mere 2500 rpms at an ideal cruise speed of 24.8 mph traveling a range of 206 miles. The burn rate climbs to 27.3 gph. As tested, this Regal achieving a top speed of 35.2 mph at 3400 rpm and burned a bit over 44 gph.

The muscle of a combined 880-hp is evident when the throttles are hammered. Considering her weight and beam she got up on plane in a respectable 10.6 seconds. Staying into it, the 30 mph plateau was passed after 15.9 seconds.

Regal has done quite a job throughout its fleet in keeping the noise level down and the Commodore is no exception even with its twin diesels. At best cruise her level read 76 dB, and at full throttle the dB meter was just flickering at 86.

Overall the Commodore 4080 delivered a comfortable ride and stood up to her well-respected title in the maritime world.
